I just wish somebody would stop them from coming in. That's the first step. Then we can debate what to do with the ones who are here already.
(Okay, putting on flame-resistant suit here...)
Newsflash, people. We (government) don't have the political will, nor do we have the resources available at pretty much ANY level to deport 12-20 million illegals. Sad but true.
HOWEVER, as I've said here and elsewhere for years, illegal immigration is a two-pronged effort. First, the feds have to secure the borders and if people are caught, send them back IMMEDIATELY--none of this "catch and release" crap. Second, for those who still manage to get in, the states need to make life so inconvenient/uncomfortable for those illegally here that they go back to their country of origin. Make getting caught a real possibility with real punishment behind it for repeat offenders. Make SERIOUS jail time a reality for people who knowingly employ illegals.
Problem with the second portion of this is, the states with the worst illegal problem are places like MD, NY, MA, CA, and IL; liberal states which won't sign on to this policy anyway.
Save that, I'm not sure what you do with the ones already here save eliminating federal funding for programs which illegals abuse most, much like the feds refuse to give highway money, etc., for policies which states are reluctant to follow.
