Women of DU: if a man holds a door open for you, how do you know if it's benevolent sexism?
Assuming that he doesn't say something quaint like "ladies first," and otherwise lacking a longitudinal survey of the man's behavior, how would you identify this one event as sexism instead of basic courtesy?
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022516837These are the people who say that we need to teach young men not to rape women. Yet they throw a fit if you have traditional gentlemen attributes, like that womyn who threw a fit that her son said they let the girls use the bathrooms first before nap time. I'm not saying this attitude is making men rape women, but the fact that they piss and moan about what we were taught as good old fashioned manners must play a part in the disrespect of women that we see today, not to mention how in this past election women were portrayed as walking vaginas by the democrats.

1. I don't know
but when I'm 100 feet behind and some guys turns and looks down the parking lot and sees me coming and waits for me to finally reach the door holding it open all along, it pisses me off.
Why, because I felt I needed to rush so as not to inconvenience them any longer for holding the door for little ole me.
Happens more often than you would think.
You know if someone holds a door for me, and I'm a man, I don't get all pissy saying that somehow it threatens my manhood if someone holds a freaking door open.
Here's a tip for you DUmmy, odds are good if a man holds a door open for your skanky ass you probably don't have to worry about him raping you. It means he was taught manners and how to treat women like people instead of a walking vagina.

3. I'm not getting this whole thing.
Who cares what you call it, and why all the brain power to define it? How about perhaps it's just about manners, or how someone was raised?
And I don't care if a stranger doesn't hold the door open either. I don't analyze people's intentions, or lack of.
It probably means they raised as a fundy and by holding the door they are making a statement that you are the weaker sex.

Seriously it's nice to see a little common sense from a DUmmy.

7. Thank you.
A very sensible response to this topic.
I thought at first that DUmmy Orrex agreed with the premise he set, but it appears he brought it up to find out how many of the DUmmy womyn felt that way. So far only the one DUmmyette expressed a problem with fundy men holding a door open.
It just blow my mind that anyone could find fault with someone just showing a common freaking courtesy, hell I hold the door open for anyone that is approaching the door when I am there, doesn't matter who they are, if we get to the door about the same time I wave them in then go in myself, and other times the other person will hold the door. It's like if I am at the grocery store with a cart full of stuff and someone gets behind me with 2 items, I let them go ahead of me. It's what civil decent people do. I'm sure someday a DUmmyette will be offended if I do that.
