The thread was open for 24 hours, and there was only one alert on it -- from a host who didn't even want the thread to be locked. I'm somewhat baffled why a host that doesn't want a thread locked would alert on it, but there it is.

Of course, once the alert came in the hosts wanted to do the right thing, so they discussed it and decided that it did actually violate the statement of purpose for GD, which says no religion unless there is big news, and no whining about DU. See here:

So they decided it was in violation because it is religion and whining about DU. And I guess I would agree that they did have the authority to lock it based on the statement of purpose of GD. (It might have made a little more sense if the host had bothered to explain some concrete justification for the lock in his locking message.)

But I don't really see who benefits from the lock. Nobody asked for the lock, and the content of the post was pretty consistent with everything else being posted here since the new pope was selected. Obviously the new pope qualifies as big news that DUers want to talk about right now, and that would include spin-off religious discussions that are not directly about the news item.

In the hosts' defense, being a host is a very tough job with very fluid guidelines for enforcement. Rather than give them clear rules, instead I give them vague instructions and then tell them to use their power sparingly and don't spoil people's fun. It's an extremely frustrating situation for them, and it is entirely my fault.

29. The Extreme Left is often very hostile to organized religion.

History has shown us what happens when the Extreme Left (by "Extreme Left" I mean Marxism, Marxist-Leninism, Maoism, etc) attains power, one of the first things they do is attack religion and those who practice it. It happened in Russia, Republic Spain, China, and other parts of Asia.

I'm not religious and I dislike organized religion. However, I despise the Extreme Left for the various repressions it has practiced over the last 100 years. I do not care what excuses the Extreme Left and their fellow travelers offer, IMO, they are as bad, or worse than the worst excesses of organized religion.

Given their hatred and jealousy of organized religion has made me believe that Marxism just wants to replace the worship of God / Yahweh / Allah with the worship of Marx. The worship of Jesus / Mohammed with the worship of Lenin.

Yet you are the extreme left and hang out with them daily on DU.  Why do you think DU and Communists hate religion, because it gives people something else to look to other than "Daddy Government" because the government doesn't give us our rights, God does.  Because with a Higher Power in the picture, Government isn't the Higher Power.

One note to my fellow DUers: Leave off attacking the mods and admins at that "other" site. They were as disgusted by this as we were, but were hamstrung by the rules of their board which they take as seriously as the admins and mods here. They allowed me to post the documentary evidence over there, in no small part because they wanted the ugliness to stop. You may disagree with them, but they are good people.
