jsr (3,216 posts) U.S. to let spy agencies scour Americans' financesSource: Reuters(Reuters) - The Obama administration is drawing up plans to give all U.S. spy agencies full access to a massive database that contains financial data on American citizens and others who bank in the country, according to a Treasury Department document seen by Reuters. The proposed plan represents a major step by U.S. intelligence agencies to spot and track down terrorist networks and crime syndicates by bringing together financial databanks, criminal records and military intelligence. The plan, which legal experts say is permissible under U.S. law, is nonetheless likely to trigger intense criticism from privacy advocates. Financial institutions that operate in the United States are required by law to file reports of "suspicious customer activity," such as large money transfers or unusually structured bank accounts, to Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). The Federal Bureau of Investigation already has full access to the database. However, intelligence agencies, such as the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency, currently have to make case-by-case requests for information to FinCEN. Comrade Grumpy (2,655 posts)6. We used to not be subject to such government surveillance, and not that long ago.For God's sake, we didn't have "no-knock" search warrants until 1973 (thanks, Nixon), but anyone who has grown up since then doesn't know anything else. Or SWAT teams. Or the assumption that the federal government knows the contents of all our most private communications. And the contents of our bank accounts. We're like the proverbial frog in the pot of slowly heating water.
There's a reason why patriotism is considered a conservative value. Watch a Tea Party rally and you'll see people proudly raising the American flag and showing pride in U.S. heroes such as Thomas Jefferson. Watch an OWS rally and you'll see people burning the American flag while showing pride in communist heroes such as Che Guevera. --Bob, from some news site
Forty years ago, if there was any hint that the president had a list of people that he wanted to take down (through extra-constitutional means), the Left viewed that as an awful thing. Nowadays, the enemies list doesn't look all that bad.
