The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved a bill that would renew and strengthen the assault-weapons ban. The bill, which passed on a tight 10-8 vote, now heads to the Senate floor where it faces an uphill battle.

ORIGINAL STORY ...

Senate Democrats are poised to pass a renewed and strengthened assault-weapons ban out of committee Thursday as part of a package of measures advancing to the floor, but are appealing to President Obama to help battle opposition from Republicans and gun-rights supporters.

The Senate Judiciary Committee, after advancing bills earlier in the week to enact near-universal background checks and combat gun trafficking, on Thursday morning will take up what is arguably the most controversial measure drafted since the Newtown, Conn., shooting.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein's effort to revive an assault-weapons ban, as well as a ban on large-capacity magazines, has revived a tense debate over gun rights in Washington and across the country. The panel seemed likely to approve the measure Thursday on a party-line vote. But once it reaches the full Senate -- probably in April -- the measure faces heavy opposition by Republicans and some moderate Democrats, as well.

IMO if it doesn't pass the full Senate...which it probably won't...it's just more motivcation for 44 to totally bypass Congress (again) and just EO the ban into effect...then dare the House to challenge it's validity.

I wouldn't sweat it.  Frankly, it probably doesn't pass the full Senate where several Dem Senators who are potentially vulnerable are up for reelection in 2014 (ARE YOU LISTENING, JEANNE SHAHEEN???) and even if they all committed career suicide and it passed the Senate, it's as good as dead in the House.

That makes it tough for the senate dems up for reelection.  Do they vote for it to up their credibility with the left knowing it will hurt them with conservative dems or vote against it knowing it will hurt them with the left. Either way they'll lie.

I just want to know whether Diane Feinstein has ALWAYS been this stupid, or whether the repeated and frequent beatings around the head and neck from her husband are finally having their inevitable effect.  Good Lord, how does this woman breathe anymore, without a coach constantly present to tell her when?

Unless we lose the house in 2014 I don't think this bill will ever see the light of day.

Then again as others had said 0bama has no problem going around congress and just doing it himself.

She'd have to go through the same process all over again.  If it doesn't pass in one session of Congress (2 years) it's dead.  Anyone here think the Dems are going to take over the House?

Did any of you hear the argument debate she had with Ted Cruz?

He used very logical constitutional arguments and she didn't answer the question just gave an answer based on emotion and zero logic.  Saying she had stuck her fingers in the bullet holes of victims when she was mayor.  I bet she has...

Not while she was mayor but she was the one who discovered Moscone's and Milk's bodies after Dan White shot them. Milk had taken a round in the wrist attempting to defend himself and when she attempted to get a pulse her finger did get stuck in that wound. But, as far as I'm aware, that's the only time she's stuck her finger(s) in bullet wounds.

Ironically DiFi did have a CC permit for a .38 Special while she was mayor for self protection....the exact same weapon that Dan White used to assassinate Moscone and Milk.
