Excellent!  H^5

It's so true. Growing up, we had a big ole friendly German shepherd mut.  The best dog ever. He lived to be 20 years old.

Beautiful.

God knew that mankind as few as they were when the dog was domesticated was needed to help his people to survive.   The society's that did not have the dog as a partner in life and survived are few and far between.

Something really spooky about the bond between a dog and its master.   Some humans will kick to the curb their own children but go nuts when a beloved dog passes away.----Is this some kind of power trip that a dog learns to obey no questions asked ????

My most unusual dog was my Rottweiler that we got at 18 months of age.   She may well have saved my life as after 3 years or so she began to kick my shine bone, drove me nuts.   Then one day she ran head on into my leg and I thought she had perhaps chipped the bone.   ER Ex ray showed I had a big tumor munching away at the bone.  The bone at that time was as thin as an egg shell.  After an MRI I was sent to Boston Oncology, the Doctors were prepared to remove my leg.    Not Cancer they found but they placed a bone from a donor into my leg.

Worse day of my life was 5 years later when she herself got cancer and had to be put down.   To this day when I see someone walking a Rottweiler I get a lump in my throat.

Dogs are not just mans best friends, ask anyone that had a war dog that saved their life.   Some story's from returning Vets from most wars that worked with the dogs are heart breaking.     Talk to the local police in the K9 unites to see just how far the bond goes.

As Dad told me as a child, if a man mistreats his dog, does not share his home with the dog or chains him to an outside dog house, so will you be treated .  He was not far off the mark on that one.

I think that is very true. My general observations have shown this to be true.

Some people rely on their dogs as a judge of character of the people that they meet.  My neighbor had a dog that would keep its distance from anyone that was not in the family unit. However, he saw the dog come up to me for a friendly meeting and some petting one day shortly after I moved in. He told me that he had never seen this dog do that with anyone. "If my dog likes you then so do I", he said.

Back in the day I had a WV Brown Dog. Dunno what breed he was, he was just a WV Brown Dog. Anyway... I'd bring girlfriends home. Some he would like, most he didn't. He didn't bite them or anything like that. He would just never get near them. Pa Perky told me one day that if Bingo didn't like a girlfriend, then he could take it to the bank that the relationship would not last.

Once I thought about, he was right.

Only one Bingo ever got wrong was a girl named Jeannie. We were engaged. This was back in 95. I was out of town one week and got finished early and came home on Thursday instead of Friday and went to her place... about 10pm.

You can guess the rest.

That dog lived to be 22 years old. Got him back in 83 when he showed up on the porch one Easter Sunday. I thought he was dead. I nudged him with my foot, he got up and puked on my shoe, looked at me, walked into the house, jumped up on Dad's chair with Dad in it, looked at me and basically said "I live here now, deal with it!", then went to sleep on Dad's lap.

I called him Sir Barfins the Ferocious.  Barf for short. Mom and Dad called him Bingo.

Had to put him down in '05. Worst day of my life.  Only time I ever saw dad cry.

I'm one of those people. My dog, Blue, was terrified and/or didn't like anyone but me. He ran from my adult sons, my sister, BIL, nieces, etc. The only people he liked was his dogsitter Kathy. He even wouldn't let his foster mom, who became my best friend, pet him.

When SR came to St Louis for the first time, I was afraid of Blue's reaction. I was afraid he'd do one of those things to SR like he did to one of his dogsitters. He wouldn't let her come down the hall into the bedroom to stay. She ended up sleeping on the couch and he had the bed.

The rascal stared at SR for a while, but didn't run away. Then amazingly the big hound tried to sit on SR's lap and was his buddy. I knew right then that SR was extra special. So did Blue. He was so upset the day that SR had the stroke and went to the hospital that Blue had a seizure after going seizure free for 3 years. That seizure was so strong that the vet said it was equivalent to Blue being hit by a truck. He never recovered from it and only lasted another month.

Our dog that I mentioned earlier adopted our family. He belonged to a fellow down the street but seemed to like our house better and was always hanging around. One day, the older gentleman that had him came over and saw why. There were the three of us kids plus the other neighborhood kids that hung around. He said, "Since he really seems to love you all and you all love him, you can have him." He was about 5 years old and so was I. He was officially our dog from that point on and he was the best friend to all of us. He was black and tan but, didn't have the pointy ears or dark facial markings that most German Shepherds have.

One day, when he was ~7 years old, he came up to a neighbors porch almost dead. They called Mom and Dad because they didn't want us kids to see him. Some guy in town that was "still in Saigon" didn't like the fact that he wanted to spend some time with his German Shepherd female and took a machete to him. Neutered in, skinned a back leg and almost cut is tail off. The vet was able to stitch him up and get him to better health. We then brought him home to help him heal up all the way. The hair even grew back on his leg. My mother never wanted him inthe house because she was a clean freak. But after this, my parents set up an indoor place for him in the utility room by the back door of the house. Mopm thought that since he was getting old and had been through so much that he needed a safe place at night and from the weather. He lived 13 more years and died at the age of 20.

As he approached his late teens, he was the friendly big old dog of the neighborhood. During the summer, several neighbors liked him and would put water bowls in shady places fore him. My friend, and later best man, worked for the county Animal Shelter. He would see him on the other side of town roaming around and bring him home. As far as they knew, he was the oldest dog in the county. So, he was kind of like Otis on the Andy Griffith Show. He would not ever have to spend any time in the dog pound. We has in good strong health until his last year. Then it got to where he couldn't walk up the steps and would walk all the way around to the alley because it was sloped.
