Senate to hold hearing on surge in gas prices

Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) will soon convene a hearing on soaring gasoline prices that he contends have “no reasonable explanation.”
 
Average nationwide gasoline prices have risen by nearly a half-dollar per gallon since the beginning of the year.
 
“I think you ask the question, ‘what is going on to make the prices go up so dramatically now?’ The custom has always been — one we didn’t enjoy in America but it has been sort of a tradition — prices go up in the spring. We are still in the winter,” Wyden said Friday.
 
He spoke during a taping of the C-SPAN program “Newsmakers” that will be broadcast Sunday.

1. What a joke!

Gas has been surging before the 2008 crash. Ever since 2008 its been a game between the pumps, not the oil fields. Nothing will happen, I hate these people in DC.

11. I Know the Senator means well but...

we've been down this road before. Gas prices skyrocket, Washington calls for an investigation, gas prices level off then we never hear any more about the investigation.
 
My solution is simple. Repeal the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000. This would get rid of the paper trading without taking delivery of the commodity, trading using a small fraction of the traders own money and mitigate the volatility in gasoline prices among other commodities. With all due respect to Bill Clinton, he should have his head examined for ever signing this into law. Phil Gramm, the most corrupt politician ever and the final architect of of the juiced up version of the CFMA, should be thrown in a Gitmo jail cell and forgotten.

Gee for some reason the mileage to and from where I work didn't go down. And I already do all of my errand going to and from work, so miss DUmbass where do you suggest I cut down?

I think that's a great idea.   Everyone should cut back.  We should start with trucks.  You know, like the big gas guzzling ones that transport products to and from the ports and to markets.

Gee thanks Italian dish, I'll let my boss know that when she wants to pull me back in the office for 2 months to train someone. I'm sure she'll be really sympathetic to your idea of using less gas. Some of these dolts don't seem to understand that many people simply can't 'use less' and that they've already cut discretionary driving from their budgets. There are some middle income people having trouble keeping gas in the car to get to work at this point. Ultimately, they don't seem to want to lay any of these woes at the feet of their savior who had a big hand in creating this 'new poverty'. Hey, at least we are all movingtowards equality though right? Equally poor and all that.

  Yep, the thing is my SUV is paid off this year. I was considering getting a better vehicle on gas for work and to get about town and using the other just for family errands and vacations(assuming we take any in the near future with this mess in office). I've had to put that on hold because of the sequestration issues and their impact to me personally. Which means I'll continue sucking up more gas in the bigger car simply because I'm uneasy of taking on even a modest loan payment with this looming and some other uncertainties at work. So an action that could have contributed to some savings I will have to delay because of all of this. So, prima, since you voted for this, my inability to 'cut back' and make adjustments lies squarely at your feet and all the others who voted this mess in.

Your right.  This is the Demon strategy to push the blame for everything onto the Republicans.  Obama went into overdrive on this the minute he got re-elected.  They want the House back and we will be seeing one battle after another and once crisis after another until the 2014 mid-term elections.

Placing blame for gas prices

a) In such case that gas prices increase said increase is to be immediately blamed completely and entirely on the current US President IF said president is a member of the Republican Party. Please note in cases of the scenario above that it is permissible to place a portion of blame on the gas companies as long as the majority and most vocal blame is placed on the President.

b) In such case that gas prices increase said increase is to be immediately blamed completely and entirely on the entire US Congress IF the current US President is a member of the Democrat Party AND both houses of the US Congress are controlled by members of the Republican Party. Please note in cases of the scenario above that it is permissible to place a portion of blame on the gas companies as long as the majority and most vocal blame is placed on the US Congress.

c) In such case that gas prices increase said increase is to be immediately blamed completely and entirely on the US House of Representatives IF the current US President is a member of the Democrat Party AND the US Senate is controlled by the Democrat Party.
