Remember the Cosby Show with Theo and the Monopoly Money?

Maybe what these silly republicans need is someone do what Dr. Cosby did to his son Theo. Hand them what you bring home on minimum wage and then start taking out basic living, rent, food, healthcare, gas, utilities. My guess is they would run out of cash at food.

These folks never lived on minimum wage so they don't get it. I don't anymore, but I see people who do and see how they struggle. Hell good sense tells you you can't live on that. Do these guys even go to the grocery store or the drug store? Do they know how much rent is?

Maybe a new episode where the monopoly money is used to represent taxes, the cost of regulations, total revenues, the budget deficit and unfunded liabilities.

Didn't we all start out like that?  Most conservatives I know did too.  In fact, I can't think of anyone I know personally who is considered wealthy.  Well off maybe, but they got there from the bottom up.

We can't all be Kennedys.

Actually...now that I think about it...considering how the men in that family ran amok philandering and raping...maybe we could be.

I was living on less than minimum wage when Jimmy Carter was president. I owned a business and had employees that made more than me. Inflation was so bad you couldn't raise prices fast enough to keep up.

I was an E-4 making $876 a month in 1988 working hours that would have put these ****ers into a quivering ball inside a month--think 80-hour weeks, plus hour trips to/from site.  And that was my "good deal" before hitting the fleet and spending 300 days a year at sea.

Wrong again asshole. I lived that and I'm conservative. Got kicked out of the house, my parents could give a shit. Rode a BUS everywhere I went--not out of choice. Was a roommate during that time instead of having a place of my own. Any opportunity I had I created or just being well-spoken helped get my foot in the door when I didn't have the formal education.

Now, one of the more moonbats I know was born into privilege. Her dad provided every opportunity, including all the ones she decided not to avail herself of to end up a loser hippy wannabe in her 40's. she has NEVER had to live at that bottom until now and its a bottom SHE created since she had so many opportunities along the way.

These people are so simple minded it's almost pathetic. They no of nobody in this world who came from shitty circumstances and overcame? Not one huh? And they know of know ungrateful morons who worked their way into the poorhouse after being born into privelege?

What struck me about the OP was how it answered itself.

It assumes there is something inherent about conservativism that eliminates poverty.

Oh sure, she's dumber than a bucket of hair concerning our personal experiences over the course of our lifetime, but even if you accept her premise she says--essentially--that 1/3 of the nation (the number who self-identify as ocnservative) are relieved of the burdens of poverty. To me that doesn't strike me as an indictment but an endorsement.

What she failed to connect was that conservativism is a code of personal conduct, a recipe. You have to collect the ingredients and fashion them in the prescribed manner. It is not something that a set of laws can bestow (and don't we, as conservatives, seek laws that do not force conduct but rather not interfere with the conduct we have already committed towards?). Yes, we all have been dirt poor, myself included, but we are conservative because we want to conserve that which allowed us to elevate our station. We wish to conserve the lessons that taught us and will teach others...if they're so inclined.

She admits it, she's just too stupid to know that she did so.

I started at 75¢ jerking sodas 40 hours a week after high school in '55 to pay for my '49 Mercury coupe and dates. In '63, I made $450/mo and was paying for a new Corvair, a split level house, and a wife.

The difference between a wage and a "living" wage is what you get for your work, and what you think you should get. The problem over at DU is that no matter how much they get, they think they should get more.

I think the difference is that conservative go through hard times and think, "being poor kind of sucks, what can I do to improve my situation."  Liberals say, "being poor sucks, the government needs to make my employer give me more money."

I was an Army PFC in 1975, what I was paid worked out to a Hell of a lot less than minimum wage.  I also grew up in an old farmhouse without interior plumbing, insulation, or central heat.  I have a pretty damned good idea what really poor is like, TYVM.  Furnishing cell phones, cable, internet, comfortable housing, effectively-free medical care, plenty of food, and walking-around money to able-bodied people just makes it very easy for them to stay 'Poor,' it does nothing at all to encourage them to move on up.

My first job out of college in '85 was for $11k a year but I worked hard and my next job was $13k a year -- haven't looked back since.  I was never wealthy and I still am not but I work hard and get by using MY OWN SKILLS, not by taking taxpayer-funded govt handouts. I don't know who DUmmie Redstateblueslut is talking about being wealthy and never worrying about food and rent (or mortgage).    I worry about them considerably along with a myriad of other expenses and college for my 17 yr old.

I was poor.  I didn't like being poor.  So I got a job, an education, and bettered myself.  Am I rich? Hell no.  But I am also not poor.

I have had bouts of unemployment, and while looking for my next best job I cleaned houses, did contract work, even worked for the post office as a box sorter.

DUmpmonkeys a certainly poor in many respects.
Financially, isn't the major one.

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

You disgust me. When I was a kid, minimum wage was something like $3.50/hour. I was a senior in high school getting my first job and learning responsibility. I wasn't supporting a family because I wasn't stupid enough to bring a life into this world I couldn't support.

My first boss taught me a lot and gave me opportunity to learn and expand my skill set and I knew I wouldn't be making $3.50/hour forever because I wasn't a disgusting mental midget like you are.

I hope everyone you meet in your life is just like you, you disgusting piece of human debris. And I hope your womb is barren so you cannot bring about more disgusting emotionally insane pieces of human filth like yourself.

Listen loser...

You'll find most people in the western world have worked a minimum wage job at one time or another. I know I have - and not only was the actual work in a wide variety of hard-labor and/or thankless tasks educational and worthwhile - the exposure to career moochers and whiners ensured I'd never become one of you.

What separates us from you, is that we decided to advance and improve so we could better our lives, where you filthy little moochers sat around and bitched about your lot in life while demanding that someone ELSE come and fix it for you and it was your right to have everything for nothing.

You get nothing for nothing, you ****ing parasites.

I never lived on minimum wage, but the point is I could have.  Why?  Because I would have never placed myself in a position where I endangered anyone other than me through my actions.  For example, if I only made minimum wage, I wouldn't have married because I couldn't afford to support my wife.  I certainly wouldn't have had kids because I couldn't afford to give them what they need materially.  I wouldn't have ordered pizza 3 times a week because I couldn't afford it.  All sorts of things like that.

You see primitives, this is what the normal person calls "thinking ahead."  You dolts get yourself in situations where you can't afford to live like you do or to support people you need to be able to support and then cry that your financial woes are because you're not getting paid enough.  Point is you should have never allowed yourself to get into a position where you can't support yourself, or at least if you couldn't support yourself you don't drag a spouse or kids down with you.

Best thing you libs could do is stay single, don't reproduce, and don't adopt.  No bigger favor could you give to the world than those three things.  If you wanted to throw in a bonus, just shut up and don't say anything.  Short of killing yourselves, this is how you libs could best serve the world as a whole.

.
Because third world peasant labor is a good thing.

There was a time in my life when I was extremely poor. I changed my circumstances. I've worked the minimum wage jobs. I know what it means.

My wife grew up poor for some of her life.

And yet, we're both comservatives.
