Love hurts: Man arrested for releasing helium balloon with his girlfriend

Anthony Brasfield saw romance when he released a dozen heart-shaped balloons into the sky over Dania Beach with his sweetie. A Florida Highway Patrol trooper saw a felony.
 
Brasfield, 40, and his girlfriend, Shaquina Baxter, were in the parking lot of the Motel 6 on Dania Beach Boulevard when he released the shiny red and silver mylar balloons and watched them float away Sunday morning.
 
Also watching the romantic gesture: an FHP trooper, who instead noted probable cause for an environmental crime.
 
Brasfield was charged with polluting to harm humans, animals, plants, etc. under the Florida Air and Water Pollution Control Act.

You will probably watch the balloon until it floats out of sight. But many may not realize that what goes up must come down. And come down they do, as litter on our planet.
 
The balloon will continue to climb in elevation until the atmospheric pressure will cause most to pop and some to slowly deflate and float down to Earth; but all will then descend to Earth where some will fall on land while most will fall in the vast ocean. This is where the balloon is clearly considered litter. After landing, the balloon (with or without ribbons) become a ticking time bomb. The balloon can have devastating impacts on wildlife and the environment. Balloons take years to break down. This gives plenty of time for wildlife to encounter this seemingly harmless, killer.

We need massive funding to have police stake out county and state fairs all over the country to catch kids letting balloons go.


On a side note, several times I have filled latex gloves with hydrogen and let them float away at work.

Hey, as kids we used to put lead strips in a COKE bottle, add red devil lye and water, cap with a condom and wait for it to fill up. Then tie a knot in the end of the condom and release......hey, it was the 50's. What other use did teenage boys have a condom back then?

I just thought of a great way to eliminate a LOT of trash. You DUmb****s could do an immitation of Jonestown. Problem solved. And hell, you'd create jobs, too. Someone would have to clean up that icky mess. You'd do more there than you have in your entire lives.

Birds and rice.

As a youngster, about 12 or 13, a bunch of us country boys went down on the creek bank to fish, frog gig, catch snakes, whatever.....and cook some chicken and rice in a wash pot. I was put in charge of doing the cooking. It was momma's wash pot, our creek bank and my chicken. So, I get the water to boiling, kill the chicken, pluck it, chop it up and throw it in the pot. After a little while it was time to add the rice. I put a cup full in for every boy there. That didn't look to me like it was enough for a bunch of hungry, growing boys.....so, I put in some more rice......and after thinking on it a few minutes....added some more rice......to this day we ain't found no part of that damn chicken hiding in all that rice.
