Ex-San Diego Mayor O'Connor admits taking charity funds as she won, lost $1 billion gambling

SAN DIEGO - Former San Diego mayor Maureen O'Connor has admitted in federal court that she misappropriated $2 million from her late husband's charitable foundation due to a gambling addiction in which won more than $1 billion but lost even more over nearly a decade.

O'Connor made the acknowledgement Thursday in an agreement with the government to defer prosecution for two years while she attempts to repay the debt.

O'Connor was the Democratic leader of California's second-largest city from 1986 to 1992. The two-term mayor was elected San Diego's first female leader after eight years on the City Council. She was married to Robert O. Peterson, founder of the Jack-In-The-Box restaurant chain.

Prosecutors say her gambling winnings amounted to more than $1 billion from 2000 to 2009 but she lost more than that.

There's 13 posts so far and not a single primitive has commented on how she's a low-life Dem.  That's got to be some kind of record.  I mean, when it's a Republican that's their main focus.  It would be hypocritical of them to treat the Dem differently, and we all know the primitives aren't like that.

Depends on the year by year comparison of wins vs. losses.  If you have more losses than wins, you aren't on the hook for tax liability.

Doesn't she need receipts?

Casinos send you a year-end receipt if you use a players card.  Which most high & even medium rollers do to get comps.

Not if she uses "Players Cards".  It's all keep track of via computer.  The casino(s) send out statements and IRS reporting forms at the end of the year.

She used the word "addiction". She is now not responsible.
“The national budget must be balanced. The public debt must be reduced; the arrogance of the authorities must be moderated and controlled. Payments to foreign governments must be reduced, if the nation doesn't want to go bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”

I do not believe this.  AP scooped the East County Grocery Giveaway?  No way.  I guess the reason there are no comments from Nads is that she is out digging up the REAL story.

I generally only gamble when I go to Vegas.  I just know the tax situations from helping friends do their taxes.

I only went there once, 20 years ago, and ended up married.

Quote from:
The former mayor, Maureen O'Connor, 66, blamed an addiction to gambling aggravated by a brain tumor for the gargantuan spree. Her lawyers said that while she had made well over a billion dollars in bets at casinos in Las Vegas, Atlantic City and San Diego, her actual net losses were around $13 million.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/15/us/over-a-decade-maureen-oconnor-spent-1-billion-on-bets.html

I've been rethinking this.  She gambled more than $1 billion and lost only $13 million.  It sounds as if she's a much wiser financial steward than our dimwit of a president.  Maybe if she had been administering the trillions
