Quote
MCLEAN, Va. — A top official with the Federal Aviation Administration reassured the public on Wednesday that, despite the fear and paranoia of some, no armed drones will be permitted to fly in U.S. airspace.

“We currently have rules in the books that deal with releasing anything from an aircraft, period. Those rules are in place and that would prohibit weapons from being installed on a civil aircraft,” said Jim Williams, head of the FAA's Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Office, in an address to the drone industry’s leading trade group meeting this week in Northern Virginia.

“We don’t have any plans of changing [those rules] for unmanned aircraft,” Mr. Williams added.

With the rats in charge, just how good is this promise? I'm betting that it was even addressed means armed drones are already patrolling the friendly skies.  ::)

I only spent 26 years in the federal govt, ten of it at the top levels:

This is what it really says:  The US MILITARY will not fly drones in civillian airspace for any purpose other than training, which is NOT to say that the FBI, CIA, ATF etc etc will not fly drones and use them to MURDER US CITIZENS.

Had they had DRONES in 1993 in WACO TEXAS that would have use them just like they USED TANKS, ARMED HELICOPTERS and other machines of WAR.  Would they use DRONES...YOU THINK!!!!!!!!

Of course the MILITARY was NOT at WACO...YOU THINK?

I have a personal friend, Lt Col who was at WACO, the govt says no military were there.  I know him, and he told me and "others" were there, he and I were stationed together in '94.

I also remember some years back during the Clinton years the US Government had made a purchase of OV-10 Broncos for use by our good friends the BATFE. The thing about it was all those planes were fully combat capable and none of the equipment the Air Force or Marines used to drop bombs or fire rockets with were removed. For those of you that don't know this is what an OV-10 is.

NO Drones over US Airspace? I guess the Feds forgot to ask Yahoo not to print this story. FAA Drone Testing sites.
Quote
WASHINGTON (AP) — In a major step toward opening U.S. skies to thousands of unmanned drones, federal officials Thursday solicited proposals to create six drone test sites around the country.

The Federal Aviation Administration also posted online a draft plan for protecting people's privacy from the eyes in the sky. The plan would require each test site to follow federal and state laws and make a privacy policy publicly available.

Privacy advocates worry that a proliferation of drones will lead to a "surveillance society" in which the movements of Americans are routinely monitored, tracked, recorded and scrutinized by the authorities.

The military has come to rely heavily on drones overseas. Now there is tremendous demand to use drones in the U.S. for all kinds of tasks that are too dirty, dull or dangerous for manned aircraft. Drones, which range from the size of a hummingbird to the high-flying Globalhawks that weigh about 15,000 pounds without fuel, also are often cheaper than manned aircraft. The biggest market is expected to be state and local police departments.

Quote
The law also requires that the FAA allow drones wide access to U.S. airspace by 2015
