College Student Dies After Overdosing on Cocaine at Home of Professor

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. —  A college student who collapsed at her professor's Phoenix home died of a cocaine overdose, an autopsy concluded.

Paradise Valley Community College student Andria Ziegler, 19, died April 20 after being taken from psychology professor Michael Todd's home to a hospital.

Todd, 51, is in the process of being fired from his job for allegedly violating college district policies prohibiting instructors from having romantic relationships with students.

The Maricopa County Medical Examiner released the results of the autopsy on Wednesday, and concluded the death was due to an accidental cocaine overdose. No alcohol was in her system, despite a recording of Todd's 911 call seeking help where he said they had been drinking and Ziegler had been doing cocaine.

Phoenix police are investigating the case as an unknown death and have not labeled it as criminal in nature.

Ziegler's stepfather, Doug McManus, told the East Valley Tribune on Wednesday although her family figured her death would be drug-related, but that there are still unanswered questions

well, as long as we are assuming fact that are unknown, I am going to assume that this is a long time sexual predator
that has finally been caught, and that he has likely committed statutory rape on many occasions, and was probably
fortunate that this particular young lady was over 18 years of age.

It boggles the mind that a 19 year old girl would give her 51 year old professor the time of day beyond the classroom. I'm not naive. I realize these relationships happen daily. But remembering what it was like to be a 19 year old college student, I just can't see it. I knew girls who made it their mission to bed older men. Especially the "forbidden" ones like teachers, bosses, or family friends. And married ones were even more alluring. But for me? Never understood it, never will I guess.

And I can't even begin to express my disgust at his behavior.

Men in power (including intellectual power) are attractive to women.  In college we had a Business Law professor older than God and the women loved him -- he was bright and, most important, funny. 

He did in fact have an affair with a student, but it was a law school student and that was OK (he taught undergrad).

Trouble is, unless they can prove he supplied the drugs there doesn't seem much to get him on.  She could have taken the drugs elsewhere, it is seedy behaviour he's indulged in but she was 19.  There's a risk he'll get away scot free and he doesn't sound like a man in possession of a conscience. Thankfully he is now unemployed and at least future students will be safe from him.

right now, the worst that appears to be happening to him is that he is losing his job, and thus is steady supply of impressionable young females to feed on.

Valley professor’s 911 call released after student’s death

Police have released the 911 calls made by a Valley professor after one of his students collapsed on his couch and later died.

On the night of the call, April 20th, 51-year-old Michael Todd was a professor at Paradise Valley Community College and his 19-year-old student Andria Ziegler was lying on his couch somewhat unconscious.

He asked a neighbor to help him and her voice is also heard on the tape asking Andria to "wake up.”

Ziegler later died at John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital.

According to police reports, staff believed she died from a cocaine overdose but an official toxicology report is still pending.

His neighbor told police she accompanied Todd to the hospital.

Police reporters indicate on the way to the hospital Todd seemed anxious and muttered, "Poor little girl.”

After hospital staff announced Ziegler had died and that police would be called the neighbor said Todd said he had to get out of there and took off.

Todd never identified Ziegler even though he was at the hospital, so Ziegler became a "Jane Doe.”

Police reports show her mother filed a missing person's report the next day.

It was still another day before they would know she was dead.

Police interviewed her best friends who said Ziegler did mention the possibility of dating Todd and often text messaged "Mike" who they believed to be the professor.

Earlier this month, Paradise Valley Community College fired Todd.

Here are some excerpts from the 911 call:

Michael Todd:
"Um, she's unconscious and my neighbor is over right now."

911:
"Is she breathing?"

Michael Todd:
"We can't tell we, a, she's tried mouth to mouth, tried putting cold stuff on her, her lips are starting to turn a slight bit blue."

911:
"Who's the one that's not breathing?"

Michael Todd:
"Oh that's Andrea"

911:
"Okay who is she to you?"

Michael Todd:
"Um, she's just a friend."

Michael Todd:
"Well we sat around, um, well she's did some Coke and I went upstairs went to bed and apparently she continued using, I come down about an hour and a half later and she was unconscious."

911:
"Anything else? Any alcohol tonight?"

Michael Todd:
"Um, let me count the beers in here. I know there's one in the trash can, I drank one. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (counting) 16, 17."

911:
"Any signs of life?"

Michael Todd:
"No Sir"

Ziegler’s stepfather, Doug McManus, said whatever the outcome of the autopsy report, he holds Todd responsible for her death.

“His whole response to this was contrived,” said McManus. “I mean, he’s been hitting on my daughter for six weeks. For a teenage girl to drink seventeen beers, her blood alcohol level would have to be point-four or better.”

“Police have asked him a number of questions he’s refused to answer, just very simple questions,” said McManus.
