When a couple Churches up in Maine decided to rescue a hundred or so villagers in Ethiopia and bring them here they the State, school system, local health care , Town and the Churches settled them in were in for it big time.
These poor people came here as babes in the woods.
The people knew nothing about toilets, hot and cold running water. Could not speak English, Not easy in Maine to round up allot of people that spoke their language to help them ALL out. The children of school age had to be taught to climb stairs, parents also. They had to be taught they could not roast a goat on the livingroom floor, how to cook on a stove and how to turn on and off the lights--
Medical problems pre school exams for the girls were a nightmare, Boston, NY all the big city's sent female Doctors and few had seen female circumcision on young girls or their mothers. Ghastly they reported. Worse was how to stop this tradition still being carried on amongst themselves in Maine. Maine's dirty little secrete.
Few of us have any idea what life is like over seas for millions. Water even dirty water is precious and not wasted on hygiene. Toilets, clean toilets or outhouses are few and far between.
Hubby would complain that some new workers, male, still had no idea how to use a toilet in the men's room, The American workers complained so much the CO. brought in a male Doctor to teach them as the toilets were not flushed and boot marks were on the toilet seats where they squat. Woman's room not much better, toilets clogged with paper towels as the woman wet them and did not use the toilet paper. The woman also did not discard feminine products in the correct receptacle and made the toilets overflow.
As about sanitation in the Middle East of anyone that served there parts of Asia or Africa, drive through our own South West and go off highway for gas and want to use the gas stations rest room, Hell better to hold it in, drive to a big rock walk behind it and bring a trenching tool with you.
