Richard would MAKE her do multiple retakes. If even one note or phrase or intonation wasn't done the way he liked, he insisted the whole set be retaken.
Richard was a prick. What is he now, without Karen?
Well, he may have been a prick (I'll have to take your word on that -- having been in a few dozen recordings myself, there's always somebody who wants "just one more take"), but he was a successful prick - with Karen's voice.
You can't knock his arranging skills. He did all of those himself and while the lead singer carries the torch for the rest of the group, his arrangements were clean, perfectly executed, and
musical.
Karen's demons were her own, as were Richard's (he apparently had a quaalude problem). But the two of them were a breath of fresh air in a decade characterized by one hell of a lot of shit music.
