The writer in me demands I make this post
« on: January 28, 2013, 09:06:46 PM »
I shall be flamed mercilessly for what I am about to say but hyere goes:

I have always been a fan of Eminem.

His writing is brilliant. His rhyme schemes are some of the most complex which the first video demonstrates. His lyrics are to songwriting what Tarantino is to dialogue.

I understand how toxic hip-hop culture can be to those who take it too seriously but talent is still talent. Look past the cultural shortcomings or the fact that he doesn't speak with a slow drawl set to a twangy, whiny guitar.

Here is the first video. It's rather crappy as the producer used other videos and the audio is horribly out of synch.

However, if you skip ahead to 2:30 you'll see an academic presentation of Eminem's lyrics.

Here is the song discussed, with lyrics. It's complexity and rhythm cannot be denied:

This next song is titled, "Stan" and it is about an obsessive fan. It is chilling. It is the musical equivalent of listening to a 911 call as the crime is occurring. You should feel horrified and sickened for having heard it...

...and that is exactly what the artist wants you to feel.

Which is what makes him an artist: he can evoke emotions from you...even emotions you would rather not feel.

A part of me has always wondered if Mr. Mathers wrote this song fully aware of the anti-social nature of his music and with a genuine concern that someone might try to emulate what he sings about. He makes very clear that it is not sympathetic (if only the media would show as much responsibility and stop inflating the egos of rampage killers) even to the point talking down his own work and diminishing his own tough-guy image.

BTW -- the song that is sampled is "Thank You" by Dido

Flame away.

Terribly sorry to disappoint, no flaming here, as I have been an Eminem fan for many years.  He first got me with "Cleaning out my Closet, and Haile's song."

Lyrically, one of my favorites is "Love the way you lie."

R.I.P. LC and Crockspot.  Miss you guys.

Nope, I am not in a place to watch videos at the moment.  Top Gear's salute to Bond vehicles is on, and well, I just know better.  :rotf:  I will, I promise, but probably not till tomorrow.

Another Eminem fan here, as are quite a few of my ranching buddies.  We say we like the energy.  Kind of like why we like AC/DC.

I am not a music fan so I don't listen to it, but my girlfriend is and she always listens.

There are a few people out with some serious writing talent that get over looked or played down or a bad rap because of their style. Eminem is one of those. His lyrics are brilliant and well thought out. From what I have been told he dropped off for awhile when he quit doing drugs and had to learn to write all over. That alone takes talent.

I can't say I ever listened to Eminem but I did like that Turtles movie he was in.

Nope, no flame from me.  Eminem ever since he came out in the late 90's (Hi! My name is...) it's as if that little filter we all have inside of us, he just took his and went, "Flick.  **** you.  Here I am.  Don't like me?  **** you."

Or as he says in "Real Slim Shady", "Will Smith doesn't have to curse to sell records, well I do, so **** him, and **** you too."  Only he said it straight up.  I think he puts a lot of himself into his music, especially the really nasty stuff that most of us wouldn't dare to expose to the world, but there he is, like that uncle who shows up naked and humps the turkey at Thanksgiving and doesn't seem to give a rat's ass, because you're going to invite him back again next year, just to see him do the same shit again...

There's a picture making the rounds of a short story written by a high school student for a creative writing assignment.  It was a really, really short story.

Here it is, in its entirety:

Oh dear, no flames.  Hope you didn't want to warm up or anything, Snugs.  I've loved Eminem for a long time.  He is brilliant.
