The power of water...
« on: January 23, 2013, 01:56:22 AM »
Back in the early 1930's, Pres Roosevelt came up with the Tennessee Valley Authority to create jobs during the Depression, stop flooding in several states, and create a cheaper source of electrical power. Here's the history, if anyone is interested in reading it. Norris Lake, Dam and Norris TN is named after my ex's great great uncle who was a Republican Senator from NE.

Knoxville is headquarters for TVA, and there are several of the TVA lakes in the immediate area. Loudon is here, Norris and Melton Hill to the N and NW, and Watts Bar to SW, and Douglas to the E, and all are in adjacent counties. The lakes and series of dams all help to control flooding from KY and VA down through GA and AL.

Because of all the rain we had last week - 8.5 here in Knoxville, more in other areas, followed by snow - the flood controllers are hard at work.

This was on our local NBC affiliate last night....I thought it was really neat what the camera was able to catch...

This is last week on Watts Bar...no a video but it explains how mcuh water was being released at various dams.

Cool about your ex's uncle.  I have many fond memories of Norris and Douglas.  My uncle lived in Morristown for many years and we would stay with him for my Dad to go fishing.  We also used to camp below one of the dams, but I can't remember which.

Cool!  I like the TVA.

I don't.  ****ing typical government bureaucracy.

I interviewed and was offered a job at Brown's Ferry back in 2006.  Of course, I had to wait for HR to get through the process.

And wait.  And wait.  And wait.  FOR SIX MONTHS.  It had been so long the manager who initially offered me the job had retired.  Finally I called their HR and spoke to what I can only describe as the world's most evil, vile human being.  I had been offered a job where I currently work, and let her know I had these folks waiting on me, and her response?  "Well, do what you have to do then!"  (exact words.)

Needless to say, I didn't take the TVA/BF job.

Fast forward another six months.  I got a call from another manager at TVA asking if I was still interested in the original job.  Yeah, not so much.

From wiki - cause that was the easiest place to find the tornado info on BF....

Quote
At 5:01 PM on April 27, 2011, all three reactors scrammed due to loss of external power caused by a tornado in the vicinity of the plant. Control rod insertion and cooling procedures operated as designed with no physical damage or release of radiation. Diesel backup generators provided power after a brief period of outage. An NRC Unusual Event, the lowest level of emergency classification, was declared due to loss of power exceeding 15 minutes. Additionally, a small oil leak was found on one generator. Due to widespread transmission grid damage from the storms, Browns Ferry was unable to produce power for the grid and significant blackouts occurred throughout the Southeastern United States.[5][6]

I used to go on "girl trips" to Europe with the woman who is a Sr VP for TVA. She oversees the water levels of the entire system. She does everything she can to avoid cameras or publicity events.... people can get really irate about the water levels on the lakes. She doesn't want anyone to know who she is.

One of my favorite subjects, water power   Take a trip up the New Hampshire and Maine coast line. Our area is just the begining of the Bay of Fundy and when the tide goes in and out twice a day in some areas the tide receeds for a few miles.    Dependable, there are 3-4 other places in the world where the land configuration has this power.

There it sits, right in front of our face and those that wish to harness the power that is free do not do so.   Too much compartition from big business would loose too much money were this power be converted to electricity.

Up north in Maine it is awesome to see docks built a story or so above the mud flats.  When the tide turns the water comes in faster then a horse can run,  When the tide goes out I found that I have been grounded on the mud flats faster the I can paddle or sail.

The amazing power of the tides and what the Moon phases that control the tide------ properly built just a few plants to utilize the tide would and could light up most of the East Coast for pennys on the dollar.

The tides have more power then any 30 nuclear plants and are dependable to work 24/7 twice a day.

I was raised on the river that has a bridge that Sparky must cross to get home, when the tide is out  it is way out, when the tide turns in one hour the water line can be be up 6-8 feet or more, depending on the Moon. here, up North the tide raises 10 feet or more .

After it comes out upright, you can see water pouring out of the wheelhouse. Then it gets to the barges.

Another boring day on the river. Ho-hum.

Amazing. Where did it happen?

The folks along the Mississippi are having a terrible time. I feel sorry for the barge companies and equally sorry for the CG. The Coast Guard was one of my bigger accounts when I was still selling office equipment in St Louis.
