Two Weeks Since I Lost My Job.... An Interesting Revelation

Last edited Tue Jan 15, 2013, 01:59 PM USA/ET - Edit history (2)
Two weeks ago today I was laid off from a job that I was only at for 7 months. I had to use up much of my savings to relocate from Seattle to McMinnville Oregon in the process of which I will never get back as my company did not offer relocation monies.

My wife and I had to break a 1 year lease so we could relocate back to Seattle and yes it was not a cheap move back but had to be done as the Yamhill county/McMinnville area is depressed. Our landlord was gracious with us and allowed us out of the lease without any further expense, we left his rental in better shape than when we moved in and he gave us a statement stating he was vacating the lease due to the situation.

During the closing out of our affairs I found out some interesting revelations about my company and the owner. McMinville/Yamhill county has a population of about 200k people. The company failed to pay the employees on time for 3 months until the local paper did a SHAME piece of their state of financial affairs, it painted a dismal picture of the company. But their bleak financial affairs are not limited to just the domestic and international theater, they are the same locally adding to the local areas depression. The company is severely in debt from a limited amount of research I did in the neighborhood of a million $$ this is to hotels, public storage, utility company's, print shops, office supply, and contractors, there are more. A MILLION $$$ in a community of 30K is a hell of a lot of money.

The revelation

The owner during the elections had the front lawn decorated with local and national republican candidates signs. It was then I realized just what kind of a company I worked for. The way this company handles its affairs is much like the republicans handle affairs nationally, they just kick it down the road and force someone else to pay for it,namely the little guy

Again I used up most of my savings in the relocation. One month into my employment I saw the first signs of financial distress when the company was being denied credit for large amounts of fuel because of failure to pay, shortly there after finding out the company's financial affairs were very deep. This has led me to think that since the company wants to know how I handle my affairs shouldn't we have a level playing field and be able to see how the prospective employer handles theirs?? I am planning meeting with my local state lawmakers and Rep. Adam Smith and begin pushing for two way disclosure. Had I known the company was in the crapper financially I likely would have not taken the position. I think this is only fair.

I would encourage each member of DU to consider pushing your local and national elected leaders to do the same thing. This is one way we can take back our power and end needless irrelevant intrusiveness into our lives.

I am actually relieved to have been laid off,it was like the Titanic being lifted off my shoulders and a breathe of fresh air.

Gee, dude, one would think you'd be too busy looking for a new job to worry about the one that booted you.

This is pretty much a good summary of why DUmmies are so unhappy. The guy spends his own dough moving to a job in a small town a state away, gets laid off, and is up shit creek having to move back from whence he came. No worries, though: rsmithwhatever has plenty of time to do some digging (which he didn't do, which he made up) and find that his employer is...wait for it...IN DEBT.

What a loser. Enjoy your unemployment checks, scumbag.

So, he's doing all this research after he left the job.  RSmith, you idiot, the time to do this is before.   You could have put the company name in the Nadin machine, and it would have spit out that newspaper article about the late payrolls.  That should have been a red flag at that point, before relocation expense.

Wow.  Just DUmb.  Not only is he a nasty creep, he's dumb as a bag of hammers.

Poor rsmithnumbers needs the state to protect him from his stupidity.  Would have been a better bouncy if the "evil" landlord had hammered him on his lease.

So, a month into his unemployment, he starts getting the feeling that his employer is shaky financially, but instead of looking for another job then he waits until he is laid off 6 months later.  And they really think they should be leading the nation?

I'm in the process of moving 2000 miles for a new job, and paying for it with savings since my first paycheck from this job will be my first paycheck in over 18 months.  I've already looked at employee reviews of the hospital and I've looked the hospital's performance ratings.  I'm confident that my new position could easily become a long term position, and that at the very minimum, I will gain a great deal of transferable knowledge and skills.

I have really enjoyed my time in Nebraska.  I won't miss the summer humidity though  :rotf:  I've met so many friendly people, and I'm sad to be leaving the friends I've made here.  I actually applied to a number of jobs out here, and would have been happy to stay, but I got a job offer for my dream job in Tacoma, Washington, so off I go!

I'm sure you are right, we will run into each other someday  :cheersmate:

How can any of us doubt the self proclamations fo the DUmbasses that they are the smarterest and mostest giftedest people in the world and that it is only bad luck and greedy people keeping them down as life's losers?

rsmithnumbers has cut that board twice and it is still too short.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

My Wife's New Cover letter.

My wife has been unemployed for over a year. Her career path is as an administrative assistant/data entry. She has gotten tired of the politics and games in getting an employer to look at her resume and to give her a response even after having a professional assist her with her resume, so she has come up with the following cover letter that is straight to the point and honest....

Dear Recruiter,

I am a middle age grandma who was displaced by my previous employer over a year ago. I have kept up a diligent effort to find new work from day one with only a few employers looking at my resume and others I doubt have looked at it all,I have interviewed and weeks later been told I am not qualified for the position I applied for that is if they respond at all.

My resume demonstrates that I have the qualities and qualifications that your posting has asked candidates to have,I know others may meet this standard as well. So why should you offer me the job?, I am someone who will be at work everyday on time,in fact I'll be 15 minutes early. I will give you 9 hours work for 8 hours pay. I will not play inter office games and I will mind my own business when it is not business related. I will also not be sizing people up based on their image,I accept people as they are. My biggest strength is that I will follow through to the best of my ability so that both the company and customer have an outcome that is beneficial to both parties.

So now you know who I am and what to expect from me. I just need to get back to work so I can assist in changing at least one life, that being my granddaughter.

Sincerely,

Dummie is telling some truth.

The company is Evergreen International Aviation.  They have had tons of layoffs lately.  But I would have sure checked them out first, looks like it's been that way on and off for years.

The owner however, gives equally to both parties.

This is why you research the company you're applying to before you ever send so much as a cover letter, application, or interview.

Then again, you look at the person you vote for as well before casting your ballot.  Look at their record, look at their statements, look at their intentions, goal, visions.

Of course, if you're going to go into something blindly, and get it broken off in your ass, don't act so shocked.

Here is the thing though. After being home with children many years and getting a job for the first time after(and after separation), I landed a job. Loved the people, loved the job, the pay was on the low side, but there was some good incentive opportunities. Problem: it was almost an hour away and I had kids in this school system pretty well rooted. Within a couple months the job I *wanted* came along, but I was still torn. I'd considered moving us up that way to be closer to work so that was a possibility on the table, but this job was very close to home and, at the time before the Obamany, offered good upward potential, a chance to finish my education, and a lot of stability. I decided BEFORE I made my decision to look into the company more that I was with BEFORE I moved my family up there. It was a small company, that while it was doing ok, was hurting because of the economy and struggling to keep abreast of the change in the market it was in. I made a decision based on that to go a new route and this one has paid off to some extent. I do make more money, but I also get to work from home quite a bit which is a great fit for a single mother with 3 kids(one with a serious disability). Why for the life of me, rnumbers would not look into this company before making a long distance move is beyond me when he certainly was capable of doing so by his actions after the fact. And given that set of circumstances why he would choose to think his hindsight needs to somehow be legislated... :thatsright: Truly, there are people out there who want to live in a bubble of protection from their own damn selves. It's tiresome beyond belief. I'm not getting why he doesn't seem to get he could have done all this research BEFORE he took the job and uprooted his family.  :hammer: :hammer: :hammer: Chalk it up to a hard life lesson and move on and make better choices, but no, someone has got to rescue the baby from his messy pants pronto.  :thatsright:
