Few things, piss me off more than that. I would have done the same thing.
I wasn't aware of the story at the immediate time, learning it only over the next few days.
And yeah, I've described this event before here on conservativecave, when explaining why franksolich would be more effective with an S/K adjustable wrench than an 88mm cannon.
The old guy was the custodian at the city junkyard; he lived at the entrance, and those bringing garbage out there, including
bona fide garbage trucks, were required to stop there and get instructions from him as to where they were to dump their stuff.
Of course he thoroughly examined the stuff, and was a better "picker" than even the grasswire primitive. After he died, his estate auction was one of the biggest and best-attended antique auctions in central Nebraska.
It was all
kosher; the city needed someone to superintend the junkyard, and he did it for decades. There being no labor union for junkyard managers in those days, he got to live where he lived rent-free, and the one-dollar dumping fee (no matter how large or small the load, it was always a buck) was split fifty cents to him, fifty cents to the city coffers. He was thoroughly honest and kept impeccable books, which is why the city kept him on the payroll long after he'd grown ancient.
His place was a paradise for stray and abandoned dogs, which he took care of.
This one guy thought he was just a foolish old man, and killed one of his dogs.
Even though he did a whale of a job nearly decapitating the rectal aperture, he got into no trouble at all, suffered no inconvenience. It was, I guess, a clear-cut case of self-defense, as the other guy had threatened him in the alley (but I of course would not be aware of what was said; others knew, though).
He lived a few more years, and died a peaceful death. The other guy was handicapped for life, but it wasn't for so long. Twenty-one at the time of the incident, he drank himself to death before he reached twenty-five.
Despite the presence of primitives in our midst, sometimes there
is justice in this world.
