Wendy’s Franchise Cuts Employee Hours To Part-Time To Avoid Obamacare

Not long after the owner of the Olive Garden and Red Lobster chains admitted their anti-Obamacare campaigns hurt more than helped, the owner of a Wendy’s franchise in Omaha, Nebraska plans to cut 300 employees’ hours to part-time to avoid providing them with health care coverage.

By moving workers to part-time status in order to avoid paying for their health benefits, the Wendy’s franchise would shift the costs of insurance coverage onto hundreds of employees:

The company has announced that all non-management positions will have their hours reduced to 28 a week. Gary Burdette, vice president of operations for the local franchise, says the cuts are coming because the new Affordable Health Care Act requires employers to offer health insurance to employees working 32-38 hours a week. Under the current law they are not considered full time and that as a small business owner, he can’t afford to stay in operation and pay for everyone’s health insurance.

But anecdotal evidence suggests this strategy may backfire on the Omaha Wendy’s operations. This fall, Denny’s quickly distanced itself from a franchisee’s similar ploy, while Darden Restaurants saw a sharp 37 percent drop in profit after threatening to cut workers to part-time.

Most of us check up on employee benefits when we decide where to buy a cheeseburger.

11. There may be several thousand companies planning on doing this that we haven't heard

about. If they all start doing it, we obviously can't boycott them all and cutting employee hours could be the final nail in the coffin of the economy. This could get really ugly if minimum wage workers are forced to pay hundreds of dollars a month out of their own 28 hour a week pay checks.

Does anyone know if there was a back up plan for this situation?

They then have to do an emergency hire to fill the vacant slots, all the while losing business as their service goes down the tubes.

Many quietly rescind their public bloviating soon after discovering they just shot themselves in the foot.

Some had to do it publicly, like Darden.

I see you are totally ignorant of the provisions of the ACA and where low-income employees fall under the provisions of that law.

No one making minimum wage will have to pay 'hundreds of dollars a month' out of their paychecks for health care.

 
Let me get this straight.

Fast food workers are quitting in droves, in the jaws of a moribund democrat socialist economy, because their boss isn't paying for insurance they never had in the first place?

Some may quit when their hours are reduced, but they're minimum wage people for a reason - they're very easily replaced.

I don't see what the DUmmies are complaining about.  If the part time workers get cut to 28 hours a week, that leaves them plenty of time to get another part time job working 28 hours a week somewhere else.

Hell, lots of people with full time jobs work part time jobs to make their lives better.

Franchise owners will make their own choices.  I see no reason why some feel the need to announce to the public what they're doing, like this Wendy's guy in Omaha.  Just do it and be done with it.  If employees ask what's up, it's an economic decision based upon sales, overhead costs, etc... which it is.  Don't even mention healthcare.

The ones who'll mainly fly under the radar will be small Mom & Pop businesses.  Lots of employees cut back to part time and no publicity.

Do kooks need to hear the effects their legislation is having on employees?  Sure they do.  But they'll hear it from others on the rare occasions they step out of the basement and will carry it back to the hive.

Pfhahaha!   Uh...no, butterball...That's not the way it works.  People aren't going to "quit in droves"...They'll simply suck up the less hours and watch their standard of living plummet.  If they did quit, there would be a plethora of available workers to take their places.

Actually, I think this is exactly what the libs intended.  That's why for larger businesses they made the penalty crumbs compared to what it actually cost a business to provide insurance.  What they want to happen is more people to be dependent on the government, and this is what will happen.

You beat me. I'm sitting here thinking; I'm self employed and work more than 56 hours every single week. If I was working one of those jobs I would now have TWO jobs. It would be easy to find another since a DUmmie vacated one because of political reasons.

One does not need to look back too far in the DU archive to discover that the notion of a 28 hour work week was once applauded. DUmpmonkeys once believed that less hours would make for more productive workers, and the remaining hours could be scooped up by the unemployed, and all of the glory would then go to Obama.

We insure a number of "nail salons". After a two day blackout during Sandy, one called us to see if he had "business interruption insurance". We asked how many employees he had on the payroll, he said none they were all "paid under the table".

Sorry no proof no insurance.

This way he get's around taxes and BarryCare.
