Quote
A woman hiding in her crawlspace with children shot an intruder multiple times before fleeing to safety Friday.

The incident happened at a home on Henderson Ridge Lane in Loganville around 1 p.m. The woman was working in an upstairs office when she spotted a strange man outside a window, according to Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman. He said she took her 9-year-old twins to a crawlspace before the man broke in using a crowbar.

But the man eventually found the family.

This woman, mother, and responsible gun owner should receive an official citation by the local authorities for making society safer.

Another article I read said that the perp drove away from the scene, but crashed his car at the end of the cul de sac. He almost bled out in the car, but they have him in the hospital, consuming resources.  :whatever:

They said he was shot 5 times - in the face, neck, belly. Liver and stomach are perforated. He's in the ICU. They said if he lives through the night, they'll operate tomorrow.

This perp will do doubt have ACLU lawyer take his suit against aginst his victim. At least she shot top kill. The sad part is that it didn't work.

Got to wonder what round she had in the gun? Seems 5 hits like that with the 38 +P Hornady Critical Defense ammo I keep in mine and he would still be in the crawl space.
"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

I saw a woman that took two .38 shots in the abdomen and was able to stand, walk, and talk to the ambulance crew. She had been violently threatening other people before the police arrived and then pulled out a weapon when they did arive.

It seems like the number of shots and their location should have killed the perp. However, I've not heard from anyone more knowledgable of guns than myself (I freely admit to not being knwledgeable) that a .38 is the preferred calibur for personal/home protection.

Odds are just a plain .38 w/FMJ or even wadcutters. Even if one round of six went wide, the remarkable thing is she got 5 rounds into the perp.

He could've been on meth or some other whacked out drug that made him super-strong. He collapsed a few minutes after the shooting, so he did go down. And, with luck, the sumbitch will croak anyway.

I had not thought about him being on something. In a past life, I worked in hospital security. I once wrestled a PCP OD for 4 hours one nite. It took 7 of us (most of use were in excess of 200 lbs) and he was only about 170 lbs. He broke the leather wrist and ankle straps twice from the gurney rails. We had to tie him to the gurney with sheets across the chest and thighes to keep him having the leverage to break them again. This guy would have probably kept fighting even if he had a bullet in him.

The sad part is that if he does live, he will probably sue the victim. I hope that GA courts are intolerant of such BS.

anything bigger than .32 is about the same as far as incapacitating power.

A discussion;

Handgun Stopping Power

http://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/handgun-stopping-power-page-2/

A comment at the end;

Quote
The best ammunition for self defense is no other then 12ga. 3in.00 buckshot. One shot from a full choke barrel would be more then sufficient and is simple enough for women and trained children to operate. Also,this method takes away from the notion that "excessive force" was used.

That comment sounds logical but is it practical ?  Handgun vs  12ga. ?

Here's my opinion:

The first rule of gunfighting: bring a gun. If someone can shoot a shotgun or rifle, they should. If they can shoot a service-caliber handgun, they should. If they can shoot a small-caliber pistol, they should. A .22 sounds plenty loud and scary going off in a house at night, and 5-6 hits with a .22 beats a miss with a .45.

The discussion of one-shot stops does not take into account the tactic of firing more than once. Those 5-6 CCI Stingers in the chest and face will change the balance of power pretty quickly.

A shotgun is best for defense of my home. My bedroom gun is a Mossberg 500 riot gun, 00 Buckshot. I'm gonna let the bad guys come to me, and own the battle space.

I do have a rifle or two, in case a pack of rabid beavers, or Democrats, attack my house.  :-)

Since I can't carry a rifle or shotgun out in public, I carry a handgun, knowing that it is much less powerful and less effective than a long gun. I carry a .45 or a .357, because I like 'em the best. I like the Hornady Critical Defense ammo in both calibers.

Your mileage may vary, but remember the first rule of gunfighting.

Grandad Perky always had a 12 gauge pump he used for "thief repellant". He said nothing puts the fear of God into a thief sneaking around than hearing that old 12 gauge getting a round jacked into it. Dunno what kind of round he used, but knowing grandad, it was 00. He loaded his own rounds too. Hard to tell what he had in his thief repellant rounds.   :-)

Your Grandad Perky chose the right weapon, as far as I'm concerned.

A lot of folks swear by the sound of a pump shotgun chambering a round.

Not me.

It's obvious that my house is occupied. Any son of a bitch who breaks into my house at night does so with deadly intent. They get no warning from me; if they can hear that thumb safety clicking to "fire", that is the only opportunity to surrender.

I wonder how they determined this?  According to that chart, rifles have better stooping power than a shotgun.  In close quarters like inside a house, I'll take even a .410 shotgun over a .22 rifle.

I would think a shotgun of any type would have better stopping power than a rifle at close range.

I would think that as well, but who knows I have only used a shotgun on doves. I have never seen a person hit with one.
