Mrs E told me yesterday that she'd been approached on the matter of the Missouri All State Orchestra's performance of this classic piece, as orchestrated by Maurice Ravel (Mussorgsky originally wrote it for piano).
One of the sections in it, a painting that the music depicts, is entitled "Bydlo." Bydlo is an ox-cart and the music represents this ox-cart approaching the listener from a distance, gradually getting louder and then fading away.
The melody is first introduced by solo tuba, which is often played on euphonium since it's high in the tessitura.
The conductor has stated he wants a qualified adult - not a student - to play this piece on euphonium.
Well, that'll be me.
Mrs E also said, flat-out, that the Missouri All State Orchestra is better than any orchestra I've ever played in to date. Hmmm. Interesting. I've played in some dandies, so this ought to be a great experience.

In other news, Lexie, our alpha female mutt, is feeling much better after having been treated for kennel cough. She and the new mutt, named Maya, are getting along famously and are kicking each other's butts by playing in the snow, romping like, well, a couple of dogs.
