Al-Jazeera buys Current TV from Al Gore

More Latest News LOS ANGELES (AP) — Al-Jazeera, the Pan-Arab news channel that struggled to win space on American cable television, has acquired Current TV, boosting its reach in the U.S. nearly ninefold to about 40 million homes. With a focus on U.S. news, it plans to rebrand the left-leaning news network that cofounder Al Gore couldn't make relevant.

The former vice president confirmed the sale Wednesday, saying in a statement that Al-Jazeera shares Current TV's mission "to give voice to those who are not typically heard; to speak truth to power; to provide independent and diverse points of view; and to tell the stories that no one else is telling."

Al Jazeera Seeks a U.S. Voice Where Gore Failed

9:16 p.m. | Updated Al Jazeera, the pan-Arab news giant, has long tried to convince Americans that it is a legitimate news organization, not a parrot of Middle Eastern propaganda or something more sinister.

It just bought itself 40 million more chances to make its case.

Al Jazeera on Wednesday announced a deal to take over Current TV, the low-rated cable channel that was founded by Al Gore, a former vice president, and his business partners seven years ago. Al Jazeera plans to shut Current and start an English-language channel, which will be available in more than 40 million homes, with newscasts emanating from both New York and Doha, Qatar.

For Al Jazeera, which is financed by the government of Qatar, the acquisition is a coming of age moment. A decade ago, Al Jazeera’s flagship Arabic-language channel was reviled by American politicians for showing videotapes from Al Qaeda members and sympathizers.(Correction by Me: they showed innocent people being beheaded to the delight of blood thirsty muslim barbarians) Now the news operation is buying an American channel, having convinced Mr. Gore and the other owners of Current that it has the journalistic muscle and the money to compete head-to-head with CNN and other news channels in the United States.

So now we have a foreign govt owned and produced propaganda being presented as news on American TV.

Heard on TV News this morning that ITT(? I think) will come out with a cable TV package that lets you select the channels you want to see and only those that you want to see......none of that "this bunch" or "that bunch" just the very ones you want to see......I might get cable TV if that's true.

I think it is Intel that is going to do it.  It will be offered over high speed internet connections, but is only being tested in certain markets.

Beck tried to buy it and they turned him down stating "their views are not in line with current TV's views".

So I guess Al Jazeera is in line with the views and ideology of Current TV.

And I read Nadin is drop Time Warner because they dropped/are dropping Current.  Wouldn't it make since the way the protest everything to drop it anyway.  The owners of Al Jazera are against some major liberal cornerstones.

Gay lifestyles are not the only problem that Al Jazeera’s owners might have with some of their new employees. People with HIV/AIDS are advised against visiting the country:

    Qatar does not allow individuals with HIV/AIDS to live in the country. Medical exams are required for all long-term visitors and residents. Individuals who have HIV/AIDS may be subject to deportation

In addition to Qatar’s constraints on fashion, free speech is also something that the new owners have issues with. Again, from the guidance of the State Department:

    Incidents involving insults or obscene language/gestures often result in arrest, overnight imprisonment and/or fines whether the incident occurs between private parties or involves officers of the law. Insulting someone in public is considered a punishable offense.

And what if Al Jazeera were to offer to keep any of the Current TV hosts?  Would any of the very liberal on-camera talent agree to stay if offered a position with a company run by a gay-hating, free speech squelching, theocratic monarchy that makes its billions selling oil and gas?
