I've grown weary of all the distorted anti-gun threads over there.
Found a short one off the beaten path, and drug it over.
Not many comments, but, I'm sure some of the names are familiar.

Occupy group is on verge of buying office building for housing for homeless

I'm glad to hear Occupy is still out there, turning their energy into long term projects. neighbors are upset though

Occupy Madison about to buy Fordem Avenue building to house homeless

A volunteer-run group that has been providing services to Occupy Madison is on the verge of quietly buying and turning a Fordem Avenue office building into housing for homeless individuals.

"We're estimating that there are between 300 and 400 people out camping in various parts of the city and not going to shelters at night," says group member Brenda Konkel, of the need for such housing.

Occupy Madison Inc., which just incorporated, plans to purchase the office building at 2132 Fordem Ave. on a land contract, says Konkel, a former member of the Common Council and a longtime housing advocate. The group needs to raise $75,000 for a down payment and construction costs. It has raised $32,000 so far without fundraising publicly but plans to reach out for donations soon, she says.

The group is also seeking $275,000 in city funding through the Affordable Housing Trust Fund. But Konkel says if the group does not receive a loan from the city, it has "five years to figure out other financing."

Occupy Madison, which began as a protest encampment downtown, morphed into a homeless community on East Washington Avenue that has been relocated several times by the city and county and now resides in Token Creek Park.

Konkel says the group's short-term plan is to operate as a mission house, but the long-term goal is to offer single-residency occupancy (SRO) units to some 20 to 25 homeless individuals. Operating as a "mission house," where occupants are not charged rent, is a permitted zoning use, so city approval is not needed. But the group would need to get a zoning change to operate as an SRO, says Konkel.

Please, Brenda(Mz. Konkel), the tactics of the developers you hate so much are unbecoming of you. "Not trying to keep them in the dark"? Of course you are. That is why you think the Isthmus article is premature. You want to get everything done in secret, behind the scenes, with no neighborhood feedback, so that by the time the neighborhood figures this out, it's too late to do anything about it. If this was going on in my district, I would be furious with you and my alder, but I guess that is why you didn't take five minutes out of your schedule to give Rhodes-Conway a heads up. What blatant hypocrisy, Brenda. If a developer was pulling this garbage, you would be running around like your hair was on fire complaining about how the neighbors were left out of the process, how the city was conspiring to get things done in secret, and how the developer was being disingenuous about "trying" to keep everyone informed. As you have correctly pointed out COUNTLESS times in the past, neighbors have the right to weigh in on these issues BEFORE the deal is done. I guess the ends justify the means for you too, huh?
Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

These worthless Occu people are like any other pest.  If you don't get rid of them the first time you encounter them, they just multiply.  Then you're stuck with a real pest problem.

Can't wait for the stories about trashed homes. People that don't have any vested interest in a property rarely give a rat's ass about said property.

Don't worry if we don't give them attention they will likely fade into oblivion just like all the other attempts to bring back OWS. I didn't even know some still existed. I thought they all moved back home to try to get a job with their History and Philosophy Degrees.

I'm sure they'll manage to burn it out within two years, even if they do get the deal.  A 'Mission house' run by a bunch of undisciplined counterculture hippies with no adult supervision will turn into a pestilential firetrap in no time.

Copper coils, tubing, etc., can yield a enough cash for booze and drugs. My grandmother is dealing with this with my crackhead cousin who's living in her house in West Jackson, the same house my mother and his mother grew up in. Just about all the copper is gone from the house and her shed has been cleaned out of anything valuable. Grandmother has lived in a place on the Big Black River for about 14 years and thought it would help the idiot crackhead if she let him live in her home in the city for free. I'd call my grandmother a dumbass, but my upbringing and better judgement prevents me from doing so.

NOTE TO DUMBASSES: The majority of homeless people aren't homeless for no reason; they're homeless because they keep making the same stupid decisions that put them there in the first place.

It astounds me that this is not obvious to them.

The amount of money they are talking about won't even cover compliance costs for a homeless shelter.  Another case of Mickey Rooney syndrome.

Over at the DailyPage article, there's a photo of this Konkel person.  It looks to be lifted straight out of a DUmp picture thread.

Why do we have to have mission houses?

WTF are we paying taxes for?
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

I just knew that somewhere in that article they would be seeking public money.

Personally I hope the private financing comes thru and they get to open it up. I'm betting it will last maybe 6 months before their beloved government shuts them down for housing violations such as lack of fire extinguishers, etc.

What makes them think the homeless will want to stay at their shelter?  Many don't want to be inside or deal with any organization.

Silly me.  I was thinking normally for a moment.  This isn't really about helping anyone is it?  It's about lining the pockets of a few with the money of others.

Say...."Mission house" - "Government loan" - wouldn't that be one of those church and state violations you asshat Libs are always so up in arms about?
