How 'Cliff' Talks Hit the Wall

Mr. Obama repeatedly lost patience with the speaker as negotiations faltered. In an Oval Office meeting last week, he told Mr. Boehner that if the sides didn’t reach agreement, he would use his inaugural address and his State of the Union speech to tell the country the Republicans were at fault.

At one point, according to notes taken by a participant, Mr. Boehner told the president, “I put $800 billion [in tax revenue] on the table. What do I get for that?”

“You get nothing,” the president said. “I get that for free.”

I can't believe that much of the public thinks the blame's on our shoulders.

Republicans control one-half of one-third of the federal government.

One sixth.  What's the other five-sixths doing?

Boehner is done, time for him to go.  Rep Ryan should be the next Speaker.
"We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and then bid the geldings to be fruitful."

C.S. Lewis

A community may possess all the necessary moral qualifications, in so high a degree, as to be capable of self-government under the most adverse circumstances; while, on the other hand, another may be so sunk in ignorance and vice, as to be incapable of forming a conception of liberty, or of living, even when most favored by circumstances, under any other than an absolute and despotic government.

Let him try to blame the Republicans.  He will still end up owning it in the long run.  The other side of the bully pulpit is that the President is the sole face of the national government, blaming an amorphous group like the Supreme Court or one house of Congress only works for short-term demagoguery, and now that the campaigns are over, it gives him no advantage.  If his intransigence plunges us into another recession, it'll all end up being on him by the time the next election cycle rolls around.

Different dynamics entirely, and simple abject surrender now has even worse long-term outcomes for the GOP than going over the cliff.

Did anyone seriously think BHO would negotiate with anyone on taxes?
This was planned to go precisely as it has. He wants to raise taxes across the board on everyone but doesn't want to own it. The guidelines have kept the entitlement class occupied with "tax the rich" knowing all along that the conservatives in the house would balk at such a divisive bill. The house says FU,taxes go up, we get the blame.

Seriously, anyone surprised taxes are going up NOW?  Whether Obama had won or lost the election, taxes would have gone up to their pre-2001/03 levels.

Had he lost, this would have been his "eff you" to the country on his way out the door.  But now that he's won, he knew the tax cut extension would expire anyway, and could lay all of this at the feet of the GOP, even if they had capitulated and given Obama everything he wanted.

But make no mistake, boys and girls--he has ZERO intention of slowing the spending down.  None.  Nada.  Zip.  He thinks he has a mandate from the people, and while I think that will backfire badly on him in 2014, his tone-deafness is legendary, as is that of the Democrats in general--hell, pretty much EVERYONE inside the Beltway is pretty much out of touch with reality of late.

And as for the liberals and mushy middle who voted for him, and the "conservatives" who stayed home--YOU OWN THIS.  All of it.
