I'm from AZ. Been in Iowa for 5 years. I've learned to fear a certain phrase: "rain mixed with snow."
That means Ice on the roads covered with snow...even an ice storm!
All week the weather men have been predicting worse weather. 2-5 inches. 4-6. 6-12, now its 8 to 14 inches!
Further we will have blizzard conditions for 12 freaking hours. The conditions will be life threatening for those on the road tonight. The people at WHO radio are simply staying at the station overnight--even the morning people!
Oh and there will be 10 foot monster drifts rampaging through the city. TEN freaking feet! traveling faster than a grown man can run on the ice!

Course now the Mannn saw the doom coming. On Monday, I bought two weeks worth of food. Yeah things ought to be fine by the weekend...but ya never know when a Hooters gal will show up at your door in need of food and warmth.

In any case, if the Mayans are right (and they couldn't predict their own civilization's demise, why should we trust them with the world's end?), then it just might be a frozen doom for us all.

I lived in Iowa for a few years, a little north of the Quad Cities area.  Some brutal winters, to be sure.  Don't put any money on that 'Things ought to be fine by the weekend' thing, the two weeks worth of provisions was a wise precaution.  On the plus side, there aren't all that many trees to take down the powerlines on a large scale.

730 PM and its begun. at first the rain mixed with snow melted the moment it touched the ground, the earth itself was too warm. But now there is a quarter inch blanket of snow. No rain left, all snow, and its coming down hard.

Up to now, we had no snow at all for this year. sounds like Mother nature is making up for lost time.

Yep moving our way too. Friday and Saturday are our days for one. A bit more worried about ice on Friday since we are getting a huge amount of rain tomorrow and then it's dropping down to freezing or cooler with lots of wind. I sense we'll see who remembers how to drive in winter weather come Friday's commute in. Hallelujah I'm working at home that day.

That looks like what the ice storms do to us when we get them.  The trees sure do look ugly for a couple of years afterwards when they've lost their leaves.

Most of these trees are pretty old and I'm surprised that some of them survived.  


I think snow and ice covered trees are pretty, tight up to the point limbs start crashing down.

I do too.  What mix of trees do you guys have where you are at?  The walnuts and oaks suffer little from breakage, but pretty much everything else will lose tons of limbs if we've not had a lot of ice in awhile. 

You can always tell how long it's been since an ice storm around here.  Just look to see how old the pear trees in your area are.  One storm, and they look like a blooming onion.  I've also go a picture I need to dig out where the ice was so thick from the last storm, that I was able to carefully stand on top of the grass, without it breaking.  Granted, I'm only a little over 140 pounds, but still.

Mostly maple, elm and a few Chinese elms and even fewer oak trees are in the neighborhood.

I've been here 5 winters and each one has been completely different. Further I'm still amazed at what snow will do. Thunder snow is the freakiest thing I have ever encountered. You know that special "hush" during a snowstorm? Add thunder to that and you will think you're in the twilight zone. spooky...

Yeah, but isn't it cool?  My absolute favorite weather right there, next to that weird green colored atmosphere right after tornadic weather has moved through an area.

It's been raining fairly steadily , but lightly since about 7 last night .  It's up to 50 now, about 10 degrees warmer than when the rain started.  The cold front should be moving in soon.

And as a long time military professional, never stationed anywhere north?

We were all winded out earlier.

And then the snow came lazily drifting down.....

We got about five inches, maybe, gently sitting on the ground, no drifts.

6:00 AM. Des Moines 8 inches so far. Radio saying it will be at least 14 inches by the time its all done.
2 miles north of me they got 12 inches. DOT recommending NO travel for any reason. High winds making this a Blizzard until 6 PM tonight.

the only WHO radio people on the air are the ones who spent the night at the station, no one else can get in.
Schools are all closed. The city bus line are down for only the 3rd time in its history. 31,000 people are out of power.
