Nope didn't happen that way. The democrat party just changed how they enslaved the blacks. Instead of keeping them in literal chains they moved on to enslaving them by keeping them poor and dependent on the democrat party.

If blacks don't do what the Democrats tell them they don't get to eat.

Republicans are trying to put an end to that system to empower those held captive by it.

The result has been that Republicans have had a "solid south" -- until recently, anyway -- but at the cost of having to accommodate the blatent racism we see so much of in their ranks today.

Like you say, both parties have changed. I would argue that the Democratic Party is the better for its changes, while the Republican Party is markedly worse.
