Walking the Picket Line at Grossmont Hospital
Last edited Thu Dec 13, 2012, 05:39 PM USA/ET - Edit history (2)

Imagine, if you will, making $9.01/hour, being head of household, and having to pay $118.88 per pay period for your health insurance. Soon to go up due to obamacare. Assuming you work forty hours, before payroll deduction, that is $$720.80 every fifteen days. This is the situation right now at Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, where employees working for Sodexo Corporation, the subcontractor for dietary, housekeeping, clerical and Engineering services are negotiating a new three year contract.

What is the company offering? According to Housekeeping Shop Steward Alex Burstein “Sodexo is being difficult” and are holding at keeping salary increases at 2.25% over a three year period. This is not even a cost of living increase. When pay averages at $9.09/ Hour these workers have a difficult time making rent, let alone paying bills, or buying food.

I asked Burstein if the company has gone so far as to tell employees where to apply for Cal-Fresh to Medical? He said no, but he had to use the Union food pantry twice. They are offered medical, but look at the price above to see what for a family policy.

WORKERS DEMAND BETTER PAY AT GROSSMONT HOSPITAL

More December 2012 Articles Business and Labor Grossmont Hospital Sodexo
Printer-friendly version

By Nadin Abbott, ninja journalist

December 13, 2012 (La Mesa) Housekeeping and dietary workers were once again outside Grossmont Hospital walking the sidewalk yesterday. The employees work for Sodexo, a subcontractor whose workers are paid less than Sharp Hospital employees but are charged more for their healthcare, say union representatives who seek fairer wage and benefit terms for Sodexo workers.

Sodexo, a contract company that provides hospital personnel, was not available for comments on the ongoing labor negotiations.

The group was smaller than the last informational rally. The reason, according to Patty Arballo, a member of the negotiating team of the United Health Care Employee Union was that management called for a last minute mandatory meeting, which Arballo called "very disrespectful of the employees."

They are slightly different stories, but next time you go to any hospital, remember that housekeeping and dietary might be making bellow poverty level wages.

What we need truly...are not minimum wage laws, but living wage laws.
First and only comment so far..

1. In the future, you'll want to be careful with your terminology.

The term "picket line" is almost never used in the context of an informational picket, bannering or rally, and is instead reserved for strike situations. This becomes important when other unions are involved; they need to know whether this is an actual line they're crossing, or if it is merely to educate and inform.

If you didn't write the headline, you'll want to inform who ever did of the difference.
:lmao:
Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

Screw that COLA increase.  Is that 2.25% in keeping with what Obama says inflation is?

A lot of companies negotiate based on what the government says inflation is or has been.  When Obama lies about inflation, he is hurting everyone that works under negotiated contracts.
