Old Elm Tree going down the tubes?
« on: December 13, 2012, 12:03:07 AM »
From an e-mail.

Someone over there forgot franksolich is still on their mailing list.

It's always good to once in a while check e-mailing lists, in case there's a name there one doesn't want there any more.

A mistake poor stupid Beth made back during the Scamdal.

We're serious

Dear Friends,

I write to you today about a serious issue. Money. We need some.

Our never rosy finances have become worse.

We haven’t received a single donation since early August.

Google Adsense kicked us to the curb yesterday. We don’t know why because they refuse to tell, but their list of top reasons people get kicked off includes “user generated content” that is “detrimental” to their “ecosystem.” You do the math. Oh yeah, they also won’t pay you any pending amounts once you get kicked off.

I spent hundreds of hours putting together the OET General Store and to date we have made $1.00 from it. (Thanks, Code!)

The good thing about the General Store is that unlike Google Adsense, it’s our thing and we are allowed to promote it. We really, really need you folks to go and buy stuff. With over 900 retailers represented, I know there are some things that you need to buy there. As further encouragement, I am offering to be your personal shopper. I know my way around the store really well. Tell me what you are looking for, and I’ll tell you where to find it. I mean it!

Things are getting desperate around here. We had to let Max go. He is volunteering to help us with emergencies. I’m permanently disabled and living on SS. As a stroke survivor, Waiting for Hope is unable to work and unable to get SS because it is too soon to tell if she’ll be able to work later. We need to make some money off the site, but instead we’ve been losing money for a long time.

We need your support. We hate to ask, especially when we know many of you are also in dire straits (or Mike and the Mechanics). We really believe that everything you post here, and even just reading here, is a contribution to the site, but we need some help with this financial situation, and pretty quickly. It can't go on like this much longer.

Thanks,

Andrea and Waiting for Hope

p.s. Please tell your friends about us. We need more traffic, too.

That's odd.
I thought it went under over a year ago when gNads packed her bags and went back to the island.
The Elmers seemed a strange lot anyway.
Talked only to themselves for the most part.
Poor gNads couldn't take the pressure of no replies to her insipid posts.

All Andrea needs to do is relocate the website to http://www.proboards.com/ and redirect her domain name to it. but I suspect she won't. Begging for money becomes far more difficult if you have no hosting bills to pay for, save for whatever she is paying for the domain name.

And she doesn't even need that - I only suggest keeping it for continuity.

There are a lot of lessons to be learned here but I think the most important one is that your business should cater to those that actually have money to spend, not DUmmies.

I knew the site was doomed when she welcomed, with open arms, the feloneous freeloader the HawkeyeX primitive, and made him an administrator.

The problem with these people is that, as long as the ideology's okay, nothing else counts; character, reputation, past, motives, don't matter.  Only ideology does.

Pain and repetition are excellent teachers that don't give a damn about station or faith.  I wonder if Andrea is smart enough to learn.

That's always mystified me about primitivity.

Fat Che was the textbook example.  He was a liar, a cheat, a blackmailer, and took advantage of the vulnerabilities of so many primitives on Skins's island; even scared a few primitives into running away, he was so depraved (off the internet; in real life) to them.

But because his ideology was compatible with the primitives', most primitives liked him.

One could be Mother Teresa, but if Mother Teresa has an ideology conflicting with that of the primitives, the primitives would hate her.

One could be Jeffrey Dahmer, but if Jeffrey Dahmer has an ideology that matches that of the primitives, the primitives would idolize him.

Ideology is all to the primitives; nothing else about a person matters to them.

Out of interest, a question for anyone here who might know.

On a board like OET, what would be the average annual cost to maintain the site as it's currently presented?  Just an educated guess with round figures will do.

$2 to the Old Elm Tree or another $2 to the Salvation Army....hmmmmmm....ringa-ding-ding, I have the answer.

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

With the amount of traffic they generate?  Maybe $40-50 a month and I'm being generous.

With the amount of traffic they generate?  Twenty bucks.

Thanks, sir.

USA4ME had asked me this question, but I couldn't answer it.  I figured it was minimal.

I think the problem here is that Andrea didn't want only for the site to pay its own expenses, but to pay her a nice salary too.

Ah, you quoted me before I changed my "estimate", but I would say it's anywhere from $20-40.  I would be surprised if she spend more than $50 a month on that thing.

Well, scamdy.com cost me $9.95 a month, so I thought given the recent 0bamainflation, twenty bucks sounded reasonable.

However, I'm not aware of the "start-up" costs for scamdy.com, as it was originally set up by members of democraticunderground disenchanted with poor stupid Beth's scam, and that was water past the dam by the time I got involved.

All I ever paid, as the owner of the site, was that $9.95 per month, for about two and a half years until I let it lapse as the scamdal was old and stale by then.

If you're cheap like me you can get a Go Daddy special for under $10 a year and I've found hosting for less than 10 bucks a month. Most hosts supply forum software. Also a lot of providers allocate you some webspace as part of their service. You can get some freeware forum software and set up your site there for no more than the domain name and your intertubes service. Now that all goes out the window if you get popular and your bandwidth goes up to far.
