Do you know this woman?
« on: December 10, 2012, 01:06:37 PM »
Why is the media reporting the hell out of this woman being on a plane that went down?  I have no idea who she is, never heard of her or her band.  Does anyone know her?

Quote
Monterrey, Mexico (CNN) -- Millions of fans on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border are mourning the death of Jenni Rivera, whose performances of soulful ballads sold out concert halls and made the singer a household name for many.

"The world rarely sees someone who has had such a profound impact on so many," Universal Music Group said in a statement. "From her incredibly versatile talent to the way she embraced her fans around the world, Jenni was simply incomparable. "

Known to fans as "La Diva de la Banda" or The Diva of Banda Music, Rivera was well established as a musical powerhouse with her Spanish-language performances of regional Mexican corridos, or ballads. For fans, the nickname captured her powerful voice and the personal strength many admired.

I had no idea who she was either...but dang, musicians and planes don't mix well

Yes, I have heard of her. A few people on my facebook account are lamenting her passing.

You have to live on the border to have heard her music. All the Hispanic music sounds alike to me.

Did she sing mostly in Spanish?  Never heard of her, but one friend from Chicago mentioned her on Facebook.

Remember when that big-time entertainer from Russia died?

Yeah, me neither.

Yeah, me neither.

We will know when Germany's popular singer dies though.  (David Hasselhoff?)

Could it be because she catered to the mexican crowd?

Polka, my dear lady, is the music of the people. It is nothing like Conjunto.....except for the accordion...being sung in a different language....and always talking about lost loves or drinking, or things of that nature.

All the Hispanic music sounds alike to me.

Mariachi, polka, and klezmer all have a certain weird similarity.

She was an American.  Born in Long Beach in southern CA.  She had sold 15 million records and a sold out concerts in Universal City and Los Angeles.   She also had several businesses in real estate, clothing, make up, fragrances etc. and had a reality TV show.

I guess you could say she was an entertainer/entrepreneur living the
American dream.

I didn't know who she was, either.

But what struck me was the disproportionate amount of news coverage she got when compared to the Navy SEAL who gave his life in the rescue of the American doctor in Afghanistan.

All it takes is one smash hit.

I feel sad for her family left behind, but when she's a "who the hell is that?", Marv's comment shows the problem with the idolization of "entertainers" today. Think about it, they are STILL crying about Selena (the singer).

Dude, think about it.  Some coked-up has-been drowns in a bathtub and Christie lowers the flag to half-staff for her state funeral complete with live coverage on CNN/MSNBC/FNC/Alphabet, etc.  SEAL gives his life for some dumbass who went traipsing through Indian Country without considering the risks, he barely gets a mention.

Our priorities as a society are so ****ed up.

Nah, just the media giving some cover for Obama with the 'spanics. While they are grieving for this singer they won't be thinking about how Obama really is not helping them out.
