Last Saturday we bought a box of Mangoes at Costco. They have gotten better each day. Tonight . . .

. . . . . they were orgasmic.

Really.

So good they could bring tears.

Sweet. Rich. Juicy.

For the first time ever, I ate the skin as I peeled them. Even the skin was good.

We have two left. They will be eaten tomorrow night.

1. oh wow

I'd be scared to eat the skin.

4. The skin's related to poison ivy and can cause reactions in some people even if they can eat the fruit just fine.

7. Uh oh! I am badly allergic to poison ivy. I ate the skin of two of them tonight.

8. I'm guessing you are doing fine!

If I ate some and was okay, I'd eat the rest too. I'm just scared of that first bite.

10. They say the allergy is rare.

In 2010 only 12 cases were reported. That said, I have eaten mango forever, to no ill effects, but this is the first time I've eaten the skin.

3. I suggest eating them in the shower.

It's the only way.

14. If you peel them correctly, they can be eaten out of hand with minimal mess.

Slice down the mango on either side of the large, flat pit. Hold the piece of mango, skin side down, in your hand while you make crosshatched cuts in the fruit. Turn the skin from convex to concave and the pieces of mango pop right up, perfect for nibbling off the skin.

I also peel them this way when I'm making chunky mango salsa: mango, jalapeno, serrano, lime juice and cilantro. The combination of super sweet with super hot is sublime with fish, chicken or pork.

15. That works well for package-perfect modern mangoes.

But, for orgasmic mangoes, real mangoes, one wishes to eat every bit that is not seed or skin. It even seems to get better nearer those extremes. It trickles down the face then neck, jumping from surface to surface as it dawns on you that I'm glad I'm waist deep in a stream somewhere in the middle of some Fijian island whose name escapes you. But, I digress. A bath works just fine.

And, the chutney sounds delicious.

Red and green, not all green.

13. Oh that sounds so good! I like pomegranates this time of year too, don't know why, they are kind of tart and not really sweet but I think I just like them because the seeds look like little rubies and are fun to eat.

16. Fun to eat!

Yes they are!

Hey, have you ever had a persimmon that's really nice and ripe?

17. The Espoused One is crazy about mangos. I made mango jelly last year and entered it into our County Fair. It won second place in a VERY competitive category (I'm in a farming community and EVERYBODY cooks). I'm thinking about doing a mango chutney for next year's fair.

You know, I dunno if anybody else has ever noticed, but the sparkling old dude's usually up late at night, sometimes as late as when it's 1:00 a.m. out here in the Sandhills, meaning it's 2:00 there.

That's not good for someone his age and health, staying up so late.

One wonders if his wife knows about it.

I may be weird, but I strongly dislike mushy, messy fruit.  I almost always slice my fruit before eating it to avoid the possibility of having juice run down my face.  I much prefer my fruit just ripe and still firm over over ripe and mushy.

I eat mangos nicely sliced liked a civilized person.
