Gov. Rick Snyder said he is prepared to sign legislation that would make Michigan the nation’s 24th right-to-work state when the bills get to his desk.

During a news conference today in the state’s Capitol, Snyder said the Legislature will proceed with right-to-work legislation for public and private employees — which would exclude police and firefighters — and that the bills could be introduced today during the lame-duck session.

“The goal isn’t to divide Michigan. It is to bring Michigan together,” the governor said, as hundreds of union protesters stormed the Capitol and the governor’s office, vociferously voicing their opposition to the plan.

It would all be illegal.

Snyder has been a snake in the grass all along, and too few of the idiots in this state understood that. Including the media, with all their "oh he said he wouldn't sign any right to work legislation!" **** them, all of them. This was made possible, most recently, by the failure of Proposal 2 to put collective bargaining rights into the state constitution.

People voted no, saying it wasn't necessary to put them into the constitution because they weren't under attack. From now on my first question dealing with people here will be, "How did you vote on 2," and I'll treat them accordingly after that.

It's payback for your attempt to change the MI Constitution with Prop 2. It would have thrown out 170 existing laws to give unions unlimited power.

You lost. Get over it.

LANSING, MI - About a half dozen people who were protesting against right-to-work legislation were arrested outside the Senate chamber shortly after 12 p.m. today.

The protesters, who are among an estimated 3,000 union members and others demonstrating against right-to-work bills at the Capitol, were arrested for impeding the flow of pedestrian traffic, said Michigan State Police Inspector Gene Adamczyk.

He said the protesters were trying to push their way into the Senate chamber and laid down in a common walk way. They were asked to move and did not, he said.

The 2010 groundswell of conservatism continues under the static noise of a general election loss.  This is indeed good news and should serve as a warning of things to come in 2014.  The sad thing is once the unions in MI are neutralized, the very scum that are currently holding the various municipalities hostage will enjoy prosperity they did not earn nor deserve.

The two biggest articulated resistances to unions I've encountered are:
1) Corruption
2) Seniority rules

I think a third that doesn't get mentioned is that unions are seen as sticking up for union workers at the expense of non-union workers. (See the whole flap about the non-IBEW linemen allegedly kept off the line after Sandy.) Working America is a start, but there's still a lot of outreach to do.

On a larger point, if you want to see our side's version of the right's general echo chamber/bubble mentality, talk to other liberals about labor unions. I have seen on this board stuff like "I literally can't imagine a worker not wanting to be in a union." Yeah, you probably cant, which is the problem...

There were just loads of ads for the collective bargaining amendment, starring nurses, teachers, firefighters, police, factory workers. We showed this state the vast swath of people who benefit from union rights, but they still looked at these everyday heroes and went to the polls and voted a solid "**** you."

I remember my Mom having to have union dues taken out of her pay in the state where I was raised, whether she wanted to be a member or not (And despite being some weird kind of cockeyed Leftist Libertarian herself, she didn't).  I have always regarded the closed shop rule as theft and extortion.

One of the proposals that was defeated would have defined a person who is taking care of any family member that is collecting any sort of state or federal benefits as a unionized health care provider, subjecting them to union dues.

Looks to me like someone woke up, looked at the craphole MI has become because of the unions and decided to try and fix it before they have to flush it.
