Back when I was a kid they were still teaching legitimate fundamental material in elementary school.
One of the exercises on which we spent a lot of time was diagramming sentences.
It's a great way to teach sentence structure, phrases, clauses, and the relationship between various parts of speech.
I doubt it's still being done, because some thick-skulled kids don't think it's fun, and many affirmative action teachers probably can't do it.
Anyway, it's kind of a nightmare to think of having to diagram that single-sentence bouncy tale.
