I put together a couple bags of 'Pirate Treasure' for the princesses next door. I decided the kids would get a kick out of a couple bags of "gold" to spend on a long road trip they were taking with their mom. We had collected severa dozen from m/zeits work where the vendors gave back the new $1's coins but were not set up to take them back. Not surprisingly that vendor company is not longer there.
I will have to scan my $3 bill from the Clinton Era during half time and post it. They were always good for a laugh, often a free drink, and some folk even thought they were legit. 
I think they actually made them dumb down the second run.

Back in the old days men would take dimes in to a jeweler , have them attached to a watch Fob, back of coin was ground down and the initials of family member placed there. I received a few from a family member and passed them on to my son that is into coins. He was thrilled. Collectors items .
I began to wonder if modern day jewley could be made with coins, so experimented and found that I was way in over my head with metallurgy. Some things just wont stick to others, need different exposies to meld correctly.
One day at the mall there was an exhibit of the silver and coins in silver taken of a Spanish sunken ship by this world famous teasure hunter, everyone knows about him but few remember his name. He had around his neck a silver coin and I really checked that out. He had it placed inside a circle of Gold with a hanging hook.
for a chain. AHA HA, I have seen things at craft stores never knowing what they were for.
Off to the craft store and I bought most everything they had in all sizes. For Xmas I made the girls with pierced ears,earring's hanging dimes. Barrettes with quarters and the adults the Gold one dollar piece on a chain. The bright new copper Penny's became broaches. I was quite proud of myself.
All this went over as well as a hog in a Mosque. Before the kids were out the door they were taking apart my gift that had taken me much time and thought. Mutterings of cheap Grandma, coming to my ear.
So next year I skipped a step and began to drill small holes in the coins, and not only was it easier to make Jewelery but much cheaper. Plus the coins were now not worth a penny to them. Screw them and the parents that they rode in on.
All supplies for the silver and gold wires I bought on line and the tools I needed are reasonably priced. This can become an addiction when the winter gloom hits. Hubby wants me to sell these at a flee market come spring.
I love foreign coins, so much can be done with them. A new one dollar gold piece if made a bit larger then a quarter would be great for me.
