Happy Thanksgiving from me
« on: November 21, 2012, 01:13:58 PM »
I wanted to take a minute and wish here at Conservative Cave a happy Thanksgiving.

Before I get started though I need to point out two things. The first is that I'm going to poor-mouth some, but there is a point to it. The second is that I'm writing this as it comes to mind. I'm not going to proof read it because my wife is wondering why I'm on the computer. It won't be a pretty as if frank or Big Dog wrote it, but maybe it will get the point across.

As many of you know I own a small business. Also, as many of you know, it is not going well right now. I figured it up today and I'm doing about 34% of the business that I did during the 'terrible' Bush economy. Such a big drop in business has really hurt me financially. All my savings from the Bush years is gone. I took the last $100 out of my credit union savings account a few weeks back and closed the account. My regular bank savings account has enough in it to make one house payment in case of emergency.

In the past few weeks the central heating/air went out and needed to be replaced. I was told that it would be between $1400 to $3000 to replace. Five years ago I would have written a check and had it replaced. Can't afford that these days. I had to go buy some fans and window AC units which were expensive but were still cheaper than replacing the central unit. Now that it's cooled down I had to go buy some space heaters to warm the place. I just had to put 4 new tires on my work truck, and Friday have to take it in to get a brake job. Sometimes it feels like I'm in a boat full of holes. I bail and plug holes but more holes somehow appear.

Tomorrow for Thanksgiving we're probably having a couple of pieces of ham because I don't want to spend the money on a turkey. The rest of the family is going to my grandmother's for lunch, but I don't want to spend the money for gas.

It's kind of funny in a way. I'm using fans, window ACs, space heaters, and worried about money for gas. It's like I'm reliving my life from 1976 to 1980. The difference is that during that time period we used a wood heater instead of a space heater.

I'll admit that there are times when it's all overwhelming. That I feel almost like tossing in the towel.  But I can't seem to do that. I just wasn't raised that way. I don't know if my business will still be around by April 15. If it is, April 15 itself may destroy me, but by my figuring I should have been out of business about 2 years ago. God has blessed me enough to keep holding on by my finger tips. Maybe He'll keep blessing me. Maybe He won't. Regardless, I won't give up on the American dream. I won't give the liberals that satisfaction. I will not go gentle into that good night. I'm going to claw for success and survival until the very end. This brings me to why I'm writing.

With all of the above going on, no matter how worried I may be, no matter how depressed I may be, I can always load up Conservative Cave and find a reason to smile. GOBUCKS, frank, BSS, JohnnyReb, and many others here using sharp wit to poke the DUmp hive is always sure to bring a smile, and it's comforting to know that there are others who share a similar view of what America should be.

So I thank God for bringing me this far in life. I thank my wife for standing by my side through thick and thin. And I thank you guys for bringing a smile when the road is rough. Please do keep it up.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

I wish you the best next year and hope things improve for you.

I think I had TV dinner for Thanksgiving a few years ago... ham would have been fine.

Chuck, that's a very gracious post and it speaks volumes of your character and your refusal to go down the DUmmie Highway.

I'm hoping and praying that things pick up for you and yours.

May God bless and keep you.

Count Your Blessings
Presented By Gary Antion on November 9, 2002

People’s hearts often turn to God when they are in trouble, and yet less often when things are going well. We need to count our blessings, not only at Thanksgiving, but every day of the year.

Quote
it is even a blessing when you have a trial. I know sometimes we don’t think of that. I would like to read you a couple of quotes and give you a scripture. Trials are blessings too.

Beaten Into A Higher Value is this comment. A bar of steel is worth $5. When it is worked into or beaten into horseshoes, it is worth $10. When it is made into needles, it is worth $350. When it is worked into penknife blades, it is worth $32,000. And if it is made into springs for watches, it is worth $250,000. What a drilling that poor bar must undergo to be worth a higher value. But the more it is manipulated, the more it is hammered, the more it passes through the fire, beaten and pounded and polished, the greater the value. Those who suffer most are capable of yielding most. It is through pain that God can get the most out of us. Wasn’t it the apostle Paul who said, When I am weak, then God is strong.

Quote
Wallace Johnson, builder of numerous Holiday Inn hotels and convalescent hospitals said, "When I was 40 years old I worked in a sawmill. One morning the boss told me, you’re fired." Sound familiar? "Depressed and discouraged, I felt like the world had caved in on me. It was during the Depression, and my wife and I greatly needed the small wages I had been earning. When I went home I told my wife what had happened. She asked, what are you going to do now? I replied, I am going to mortgage our little home and go into the building business. My first venture was the construction of two small buildings. Within five years, I was a multimillionaire. Today if I could locate the man who fired me, I would sincerely thank him for what he did. At the time it happened, I did not understand why I was fired. Later, I saw it was God’s unerring and wondrous plan to get me out into the way of his choosing."

Quote
There is so much we have in life for which we cannot pay.

The things we take for granted in our journey day by day.

From early in the morning until the day is done,

We ought to count our blessings and name them one by one.

Health, peace, happiness, love of kin and friends,

Birds, trees, flowers, seas, a list that never ends.

Summer, autumn, winter, spring, each brings something rare,

And we accept what comes our way without a thought or care.

We really ought to think a bit of what we have and why,

There is so much belongs to us, the stars, the moon, the sky.

The very air we breathe each day, and food upon the board,

And the only way we can ever pay is by our thanks to Thee, O Lord.
At this Thanksgiving, yes especially every day too, let’s count our blessings, and let’s give thanks to our gracious God.
It is said that branches draw their life from the vine. Each is separate yet all are one as they share one life giving stem . The Bible tells us we are called to a similar union in life, our lives with the life of God. We are incorporated into him; made sharers in his life. Apart from this union we can do nothing.

Happy Thanksgiving, Chuck, and know that we're all pulling for you.  Something that I've learned is this--"This, too, shall pass."  My take is that you're being tested (think Job in the Bible--well, maybe not that extreme).  Trust that God has a Plan for you, and look for what He is trying to teach you through this.  It can be really tough to do at times.

Hope all y'all had a great Thanksgiving. All that is left to do is eat the Pecan Pie. MMMMM

If any are still out and need to drive home, be careful.
Come to think of it, unions do create jobs. Companies have to hire two workers to do the work of one.
