So, a little old lady is living in her home that was purchased and paid off years ago, while she happily lives out her golden years with a modest fixed income of say, $30K.  Say the house is worth $300,000 by now.  Ban comes along and wants to tax her $45,000 per year.  Little old lady dies homeless and frozen, huddled near a streetlamp.

Ban, why do you hate the elderly so much?  Would you do the same to a disabled person?  An unemployed person, like your fellow DUmmies?

When I gave notice at my last job, they told me that I was going to be offered a promotion at my next review (which would have been a few weeks later) and asked if there was anything they could do to make me stay.  I was going back to school for a different career, so I didn't take their offer.  On my last day though, my boss told me that if nursing didn't work out, or if it wasn't what I expected I should come back and she would find a job for me.  That was a really amazing feeling, and I hope to make that type of impression at every job I work at.

Yeah, I'm not disagreeing with the destination, I just think it'll be more of a long, slow, painful process than a quick cathartic one, kind of like what happened to England post WW2 except without the backstop of the US to stop the slide into the abyss.

Think Europe when Rome fell. All the scenarios you mentioned, Greece, Germany and Japan circa 1945, California, etc., all had a financial "support group" (EU, Marshall Plan, the U.S.). In this case, there is no support group, and if there is, there isn't one near big enough.

I say cut entitlements severely. The entitlement crowd could stand to lose a little weight both literally and otherwise; the military however can not.

Okay let me see if I can figure out how this works. The little DUmmie is busy making widgets. We don't know how or why or where but he's happy because he has no boss. We don't know where the materials for the widgets came from. We don't even know where the initial capital came from to buy widget making tools & materials, but that doesn't matter except we know it didn't come from the widget making DUmmie. So after laboring for years, months, days, hours...whatever a DUmmie thinks is hardship, along comes a rich person and steals all the money the DUmmie made from a widget that has no purpose?
