If any of you folks are thinking about getting a cat
« on: November 01, 2012, 04:08:07 PM »
Don't get a Siamese, look I love my cat but it wasn't what I was looking for.

She is just far to needy, my last cat tolerated my existence and would occasionally let me pet her and that was good enough for me.

This cat sits around and stares at me, it wakes me up at 0300 hrs to snuggle.

She is a pure breed, avoid that, If I had it to do over I would get a feral kitten.

I would like to throw my cat at Bob.

My cat is pretty vocal too.  If he doesn't get an hour of playtime a day, he won't leave me alone.

 :fuelfire:

This cat yells at me all the time.

She sounds like a panther running around. I go to the restroom she is right there. I work on the furnace she is handing me tools.

If I would let her outside she would be helping take the head off my truck engine.

Shes a freaking dog in cat skin.

Here is her favorite toy,

she uses it to chock me at night, she has a box full of toys.

But still she stands on my chest and steals my breath.

When I was young I found a Siamese cat out on a country road and brought it home.  It turned out to belong to my oldest sister's friend, but she didn't want it back.

What a great thread for my car story as only today I was heard to say "damn, I might have to get another cat."

But first I need to comment on the initial post and commiserate with the poster as once upon a long time ago I actually was adopted a gray seal point Siamese.   It loved to suck on my slippers and bath robe and was very needy. It was also loud.  Never again.  If (a very big IF I get another cat it will be a tabby type shelter cat).  Have had many of those over the years.  They are no where near the trouble of the Siamese.

And now for the car story.  Seems because some of health problems I was unable to drive my G6 so it sat in the garage for several weeks.  When I was able to resume driving I found it easier to use m/zeits Subaru.  The weather has been mild but a few days back it got a bit colder and  m/zeit asked me why she was not getting any heat in the G6.

I checked all the settings and then opened the hood.  No coolant in the reservoir.  I checked its garage bay.  Plenty of coolant on  the floor. Off it went to the garage.  The call was two leaking head gaskets and a leaking cross over pipe.  To their credit the dealer called GM as the G6 just a whisker out of warranty and got approval to do it under warranty if I would pay a small deductible.  Would I pay a small deductible ?  Oh heck yes, a couple hundred as opposed to a couple thousand, who wouldn't.

Now that would be a wonderful end to the story but no, today they discovered that there was a mouse nest and damage to the fuel injection wiring.  And that is not covered by any warranty known to man.  Fortunately they treated me real nice on that as well.  I am delighted since I didn't buy this new.

My cat was a feral kitten.  She was found abandoned when she was very young.  I got her a 8 weeks and she is the most affectionate and dog-like cat imaginable.  She is usually waiting for me at the front door when I get home, and she loves curling up and cuddling.  She will happily let me rub her belly.

I will explain.

There is one place where the utilities come into my place, Flies find it.

I get about two or three a day.

I also have to deal with box elder bugs. Google it.

The cat didn't originally care about flies but she seemed to learn from my dislike of flies.

She does things at night, terrible things, its just cat things. I guess I'm just glad I am asleep when she does her thing,

I've had cats my whole life.  I agree about the siamese types.  Not my favorite pets.  Infact, I won't have another short haired Asian type again.  That includes any cat with short hair and a thin body regardless of fur color.   They would claw or bite without any reason.  Best ones as pets for me were angora types like the Maine Coon.

P.S.  I wouldn't get a ferral.  I tried that, even hand raising it, couldn't get wild out of her.  Ferrals are good mousers.  If you have a rat or mole problem they are great for keeping down the rodent population, but they will never be a real pet, at least mine wasn't.

My first cat, my dad ran a bread route for Wonder Bread and found her under a dumpster.

This was about 1975 or so.

We named her Kunta Kitty.

The next cat we took in was just a stray, a grey tiger stripe.

She was awful affectionate, we called her rubjob

The next one was a stray tom, we called him Bob, that was my Dads idea.

My Dad had to work on this cat for about a month just to make friends.

And it wasn't so much to make friends with this cat but to save his birds, he had this bird feeder, really just a board in a tree with bread scraps.

He managed to make friends with it. I still don't know how. It was black and it seemed to be built out of stone. It was a dangerous cat to pet.

It was an intact feral male, the dang thing would disappear for a month and then show up just beat to flinders.

I have only seen male feral cats fight twice and I would bet on Bob every time.

You need a cat!

I am still tossing it about.  I do have  litter and a litter box in the basement.   I got one of my last cats at the neighborhood grocery years ago.  It was sleeping in the lettuce bin.  The grocer, a friend, picked the cat up and said, " how about a little pu$$y to go along with the beer."  I mean who could say no? Sleeping in a lettuce bin was not condusive to good health.  That little bugger cost me a fortune in vet bills.

Ce-Celia the cat went on to become boss cat, training all other cats, mine and in the hood.  A natural mouser, it actually took down a grouse ( about the size of a pigeon or crow) and was always willing to go toe to toe with neighborhood dogs.  Lived to be a shade under twenty years old.

The beagle is ok with cats so that would not be a problem.  For now I am re-baiting all the snap traps.  No catch and release, this is WAR Miss Scarlet, WAR.

The G6 I mentioned in the other post was actually the last in a long line of mouse problems that stated with my Barracuda.      Thought I had the problem contained but this year seems to be a banner year for mice.  Beware...

Ditto you post.  I have had barn cats, a feral, and of course a collection of regular house cats.  Best Coon cat story:  Eating a hamburg in St. Thomas VI.  Hear a low growling from the stomach of the person to my right, a woman in a long loose wrap in which she had a Coon Cat rather like the way folk carry a baby. This guy was massive and darn big paw so if  he had made a grab for my burger he would have had  it.  i had never seen one before and was some impressed.

I think Vesta may have a Coon Cat.

I have a Siamese. Not my choice but he's mine and I wouldn't trade him for anything.  He calls me MeowMa. Greets me at the door and sleeps on my pillow.  He paws at the arrow on my PC screen and is a real picky male.  He does bite but has calmed down a lot as he ages.  And yep, he loves his belly rubbed.  I'm gonna keep him, keeps the neighbors away  :lmao:

Well, as long as we're talking about a cat exchange...

I had just bought the house (six years now?@!?) and decided I needed a little companion, so I went to the Humane Society and got this big tabby that they claimed was just adored by the family who had him but who couldn't keep him.

And as they had no kittens, I took that one and called him Boc (short for Big Orange Cat.)  At first he seemed shy but figured that was just because he was in new unfamiliar surroundings.

That was six years ago.  NOBODY picks this cat up, and I mean NOBODY.  He will, however, come up with a 100-db purr and rub your feet.  Not your legs, mind you--dangling feet only.  Bend in his general direction, and off he'll dash.  In fact, he's rubbing my feet as I type this.

On the good side, if I can't catch him, I don't have to take the fat bastard to the vet, and the day I do get to pick him up without him running off, I'll know he's actually dead....

The only time I have needed stitches was from a Siamese cat my sister brought home.  But, to be fair, I think she overdosed him on catnip.  We knew nothing.

My favorites are the feral cats that come with the various ranch houses/barns that I've lived at.  Pretty fun to get them somewhat tame.  They will come in the house occasionally for petting and treats and then go to the door to be let out when they are sick of us.  They never overstay their welcome and never jump on countertops.  Perhaps best of all, they have no interest in litter boxes but prefer the outside.

For those who would worry:  We neuter the males that we can, spay what females we can catch and vaccinate everything.

Of the current 3 we have....

Jazzy was a feral cat that we got as a kitten, for my daughter. She and her sister, Cleo were with my daughter almost a year, when Daughter moved back home. She was really shy and stayed to herself until we gave Clea to a friend of my son, because Cleo did not play well with the other 4 cats. Now, at 8 years old, Jazzy is a clinger. She loves to lay on laps, or be held like a baby. She's not big on having her tummy rubbed, but will tolerate it. And she loves to be combed.

Skyye and Bailey would rather sleep on us than not, and like Jazz, demand attention. Got them and their sister, Cocoa, at the animal shelter's satellite location at PetSmart. They were barely a pound and a half each. And all have been clingers, although Jazz is the only one that you can pick her up any time and she will just snug up against you.

They all come when called and act more like dogs in being specific person attached, than I have ever seen any cat behave. Skyye will even "fetch" her feather toys and bring them back for me to throw them again. She will go  get "feathers" and bring them in and drop it at my feet, squawk at me to play with her. This is cat behavior?  :???:

They all disappear though when the doorbell rings and won't come out of hiding until they are sure "strangers" have left.

Bailey gifted M with a mouse the other morning. She came in from the screened porch and dropped dead mouse at M's feet. He then brought dead mouse back to my office so I could see it.

I don't want to see dead mouse.

Will be acquiring mouse removal implements this weekend.  :panic: I really don't want the cats - who are indoor only - being mouse catchers. I have been wondering how mouse ended up dead. The girls don't have front claws. The mouse didn't look mauled or bloody. Maybe it died of fright?
