That's one big-ass fish.

Halibut fishing is too much like work.  I'd rather fish for salmon.

That looks like something out of a bad horror film. Attack of the halibut or something.

a stone, one of various units of weight, esp. the British unit equivalent to 14 pounds (6.4 kg).

Once the energy-sapping fight was over it took three men to haul the 30-stoner aboard. Back on land, they found it measured 8ft 1in in length, 6ft 4in around the middle and weighed in at 443lb, 24lb more than the previous record for a line-caught halibut.

I have been a member of FR for years, but I never knew they had a norway ping list. :-)

big fish.

The Norway ping list on freerepublic was started some years ago by yours truly, when tomjohn77, an authentic Norwegian living in Norway, complained that members of freerepublic were anti-Norway.

That was his superficial complaint; when I surveyed other Norwegians on freerepublic, I found out that they oftentimes felt left out, immediately dismissed by other members of freerepublic, most usually because their English wasn't all that good.  Workable yes, but good, so-so.

My attitude's always been that one never learns a second language as well as he has learned his original language, and so it's unfair to discount people who don't know perfect English.

At the time, Norway like Australia was militarily engaged in both Afghanistan and Iraq, but many members of freerepublic confused Norway with "Sweden" or "France," and this to me seemed unfair.....and here, Norway isn't even a member of the European Union, going its own way.

And of course Norway is the Nebraska of Europe; it's a big country, but there just aren't that many people there.  So there was some parallel in sentiments here.  freerepublic at the time (2003?) had about as many Norwegians as Nebraskans.

I am talking authentic Norwegians here, not the "Japanese" and "British" and "Australians" and somesuch posting on Skins's island actually from their abodes in Cleveland or Lost Angeles or Seattle.  As things went on, I actually got real mail in real life from the Norwegian members of freerepublic, and packages too.

When the computer I had before the one I had before this one crashed, I lost the Norway ping list; the only "record" I've ever lost (because I don't store things on computers).  Other members of freerepublic authentically European picked up the slack, but broadened it to be more generally European in scope.

I miss the Norway ping list, but it was a lot of work, because it was always incredibly difficult to find news of interest about Norway; most of them were stories involving, inevitably, reindeer.

Norway, huh? I'd have thought they were fins.   :lmao:

I hope this thread doesn't turn into a pun thread. It's okay if it's an accident, just don't do it on porpoise.   :hammer:

I have to add that one of the unintended consequences of the Norway ping list was that freerepublic amassed the largest possible collection of Norwegian recipes, mostly fish recipes.  It was a big deal.  Really.

Halibut as big as an Barn Door !

The 2008 Barn Door Halibut Fishing Season is being booked now!Ninilchik man lands first barn-door of the season
http://homernews.com/stories/052108/news_6b_003.shtml

All Ninilchik Captain Randolf Murphy was looking for was another chicken to fill his limit.

Instead he landed the first barn door halibut of the year.
This 83 inch, roughly 300 pound halibut was caught May 10 our Ninilchick Murphy caught an 83-inch flatfish May 10. According to length/weight charts that can somewhat accurately determine a big halibut's heft, his fish probably pushed the 300-pound mark.

"It was just dumb luck," Murphy said. "It sure was fun though."
http://homernews.com/stories/052108/news_6b_003.shtmlsnip
Big fish are nothing new to the Deep Creek and Ninilchik area either. In 2005, John Bierman from California hauled in a 365-pound monster during Father's Day weekend.

In 1987, Kathleen McCann of Ninilchik caught a halibut that was 94.75 inches long and was estimated to weigh 466 pounds.
That big halibut was caught in just 38 feet of water.
