I wrote some books. I did. I wrote some books.

I haven't seen this  brought over yet. The OP is fairly interesting story, especially when compared to the current crop of Bouncy Tales, but I brought it over because of Wee Willie. He hasn't been getting the spotlight that he's used to. Did you know that he wrote books? Did you know that he wrote books?

Fact Checked My Teacher

Before I begin, I would just like to formally introduce myself on DU. My name is Aaron, I'm 16 years old, and I'm from New York City, New York.

Anyway, let me begin, so in New York State in order to graduate, one must take a Health course. I know it sounds stupid, but for me its an easy 95. Regardless, my teacher is former military, pro-small government, and around fifty years old. He also has a sticker saying that he supports the separation of "Darwin and state," so it comes as now surprise that he is a Republican.

So in today's class, I walked in and saw on the board "$712 billion cut from Medicare" and an arrow pointing to AARP. This didn't come as a surprise since he done enough Obama-bashing for a lifetime. Anyway, I, who is not a fan of political discussion with teachers, thought to myself, seriously. So, we begin discusses what AARP actually does and why it endorsed the Affordable Care Act. He came to the conclusion that AARP endorsed the Affordable Care Act simply because its "Medicare cuts" forced seniors to get more supplement coverage from AARP. In other words, lobbying. It's an interesting argument that sounds reasonable, obviously it's was a bunch of stuff, malarkey if you please.

I'd had enough. I'd allowed him to walk over the Affordable Care Act for nearly two months, and allowed him to spew GOP talking points to the fellow classmates. I had heard this Medicare crap all throughout the summer, the conventions, and the debates. I, being a policy wonk, had that Joe Biden smile of death on my face as I raised my hand. When I was called, I quickly pointed out that it was not $712 billion in cuts but actually $716 billion. Next, I pointed out that the Medicare cuts wasn't from coverage to seniors, but actually from wasteful spending to hospitals and big pharma. Finally, I said that the Paul Ryan's budget also cut the same number, but the cuts under "Obamacare" extended Medicare by eight years. As I spoke, I realized that the class favored by facts over his talking points.

He tried to cut me off, but I persisted. I, then, pointed out the Washington Post had given it four pinocchios, and that PolitiFact.com (I had also pointed out that it was an arm of the Tampa Bay Times and was a winner of the Pultizer Prize) had deemed it as utterly false. He, then, said, "The Washington Post endorsed Obama. It's not true." I simply, "No, it's called facts." The class, in unison, yelled, "Oh!" My teacher looked at me with that face (the "I know I just got fact-checked face"), and had no reply.

Shut him up real good...

Edit: He also attempted to tell me and my friend that Fox News wasn't biased.

Note: I attend a Catholic High School on a scholarship; since most NYC high schools are terrible especially in the Bronx.

69. Um...Winky...

I taught at a private Catholic school while writing books against the Bush administration and the wars. The admin was, to a person, very very liberal, and they made it God-wrathingly clear that NO POLITICS shall enter the classroom by way of a teacher.

Take care with that broad brush.

As a former teacher who was writing anti-Bush and anti-Iraq-war books while still teaching, I felt it was my highest duty (beyond educating my students) to keep my own politics out of the classroom. Kids need to figure that stuff out on their own, and I did not want my students a) parroting my beliefs back at me to curry favor for a good grade, or b) afraid to express themselves for fear of getting a bad grade.

Cheers, and welcome to DU.

I bet the kid lives in low income housing and is a gerneration welfare bum. What I mean by generation welfare bum is that his Great Grandparents, his Grandparents, his parents , and him are all on welfare. The morons are only voting for obama because he gives them free stuff. They are too stupid to know that obama doing that is keeping them down with no possibility of ever bettering themselves. They will stay on welfare and sponge off the tax payers for the rest of their lives.

Kid,

If you don't pay people for products and services they stop providing them to the consumer. So, yes; it is a cut to seniors.

You may get a 95 in condom deployment but you get a 60 in consumer economics.

I think schools should start teaching economics to kids. Maybe then, some of them would know some things.

The first thing that came to my mind.  :lmao:
Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

Hey kid, the DUmmies might buy that BS story but momma won't. She'll know the real reason you got that "F".

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

How the AARP Made $2.8 Billion By Supporting Obamacare's Cuts to Medicare

<snippets>

Quote
Here’s how it works. AARP isn’t your every-day citizens’ advocacy group. The AARP is also one of the largest private health insurers in America. In 2011, the AARP generated $458 million in royalty fees from so-called “Medigap” plans, nearly twice the $266 million the lobby receives in membership dues.

Medigap plans are private insurance plans that seniors buy to cover the things that traditional, government-run Medicare doesn’t, like catastrophic coverage. Medigap plans also help seniors eliminate the co-pays and deductibles that are designed to restrain wasteful Medicare spending.

Quote
AARP blocked Medigap reforms, saving the group $1.8 billion

But the AARP aggressively, and successfully, lobbied to keep Medigap reforms out of Obamacare, because AARP receives a 4.95 percent royalty on every dollar that seniors spend on its Medigap plans. Reform, DeMint estimates, would have cost AARP $1.8 billion over ten years.

Quote
Cuts to Medicare Advantage could earn AARP over $1 billion

Quote
Cuts to Medicare Advantage could earn AARP over $1 billion

Not only did AARP succeed in getting Democrats to balk at Medigap reform. Obamacare’s cuts to Medicare Advantage will drive many seniors out of that program, and into traditional government-run Medicare, which will increase the number of people who need Medigap insurance.

Quote
AARP Medigap plans exempted from Obamacare’s insurance mandates

It gets worse. AARP Medigap plans are exempted from most of Obamacare’s best-known insurance mandates. AARP Medigap plans are exempted from the ban that requires insurers to take all comers, regardless of pre-existing conditions. The plans are exempted from the $500,000 cap on insurance industry executive compensation; top AARP executives currently make more than $1 million. AARP plans are exempt from the premium tax levied on other private insurers. IPAB, Medicare’s rationing board, is explicitly barred from altering Medicare’s cost-sharing provisions, provisions that govern the existence of Medigap plans.

And AARP Medigap plans are allowed to have twice the administrative costs that other private insurers are allowed under Obamacare’s medical loss ratio regulations. This last point is key, because AARP’s 4.95 percent royalty is a significant administrative cost.
