Twitter Universe Reacts To Des Moines Register Endorsement

Twitter meme of the moment: Des Moines endorsement vs. WaPo VA Poll:

Sam Stein ‏@samsteinhp
Nice/unexpected get for Romney with the DMR endorsement. But I'm guessing they'd rather have the WaPo VA poll numbers

- Matthew Dowd ‏@matthewjdowd
- @samsteinhp true my friend.

@AdamSerwer: Would you rather be up four in Virginia or get endorsed by a newspaper in Iowa?

daveweigel ‏@daveweigel
Winning the DMR endorsement was crucial for 2008's Iowa caucus winner, President Hillary Clinton.

Jamelle Bouie ‏@jbouie
DMR endorsement of Romney: Obama stimulus was right course, but now we need Romney confidence fairy

Jamison Foser ‏@jamisonfoser
The Des Moines Register only endorses really high-quality Republicans like Dick Nixon and Mitt Romney.

Well, I dunno.

The Des Moines Register has historically been a pretty significant newspaper, its influence far outspreading its subscribers.

That happens; there's newspapers in small places that wield great influence; think of the Emporia Gazette of past days.

This is the first time since 1972 the newspaper's endorsed the Republican candidate for president--they even endorsed Walter Mundane in 1984, for God's sake.

So this defection is important.

Just curious, shouldn't a sitting President, who's been so "successful" in the minds of the left, shouldn't he be doing much better in the polls?

I remember Rush on Thursday or Friday talking about this newspaper, and even he didn't even remotely expect them to endorse Romney.

If he was white he would be polling at 99%, but all us racist bastards can't stand a black man in the White House.  :-)

I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

Obama is down in the polls because America is inherently and irredeemably racist.

Which is why it must be ruled by a black man.

DM Register is my hometown paper. They are VERY liberal...which shocks me...and the supposedly conservative Chicago Tribune endorsed Obama. I'm so confused...

I think in this day and age a newspaper endorsement is no more influential than my own.

By the way, I endorsed Romney early in the primary process, and he won.

I hope the Des Moines Register can measure up to my record.

Four Iowa papers have endorsed Romney now!

This includes the Quad City Times that was known as the "Times Democrat" when I was young. They supported Obama in 2008.

Somehow we are to believe that the democrat party members are going to turn out in greater numbers than 2008 and also buy into the fact that 2010 never ever happened and republican turnout will be historically low.

If I lived in democrat infested failing big city, I would be on the phone upping my insurance and planning a nice long trip out of the city because it's going to burn.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Just so.  The Register itself is a reliable draft horse of the Democrat wagon, so this event is notable for that alone.  Its true significance, though, is that it speaks to something deeper that is going on far beyond the editorial board meeting room of that paper.  They sense that the momentum is not on the side of Obama, and have cast their lot with where they think their market is going.
