Voted today and scared the crap out of the conservatives!


 
Today my feisty S/O, which some of you may know here as Supernova, went to our local board of elections to cast our ballots in this years election. So far, so good.....

Walking up to the building we were greeted by an older white gentleman along with an African American gentleman, who was also older, stumping for the "dark side" of the force. He smiled, I smiled back as I was raised to be at least somewhat polite, and he said "could I interest you in a list of Republican candidates to vote for?" I replied very kindly "Thank you sir, but quite honestly I would rather rot in hell than vote for a Republican." His mouth dropped. As I walked to the entryway he yelled something about throwing my vote away, to which I replied that he was stumping against his on best interests.... his comments were drowned out by the whoosh of the door. Ahh.. the glitz and glamor of the voting booth awaited.......

Speed forward about 15 minutes to where my feisty life partner and I emerge with smiles on our faces knowing that we have tried to better our world by voting for the Democrats. As I approached the older fellow who we had interacted with before, I said "A miracle just happened. I voted for a black guy and didn't burst into flames!" It would be easier to tell you the rest in a script format....

Older gentleman: I'm not voting against my self interest!

Me: So what do you think of him wanting to eliminate all of your deductions for your taxes? What do you think he wants to use that money for?

Older gentleman: TO CREATE JOBS!

Me: No, he wants to start a war with Iran.

Older gentleman: He didn't say that last night.

Me: No, he changed his stance yet again last night but he has stated such in the past.

Feisty life partner: Do you receive social security?

Older gentleman: Yes I do

Feisty life partner: He wants to do away with that for your children and any future generations. (she didn't get an answer when she asked if he was on medicare)

Older gentleman: Well social security won't be around for much longer anyway....

Me: For a party that tries to appeal to the religious right, you sure aren't practicing what you preach.

Older gentleman: Give me an example.

(wrong thing for him to do... I was raised by fundie right wingers, so I know my stuff here)

Me: Well, for one how about "what you do for the least of mine you also do for me"

Older gentleman: "He was talking about people, not government."

Me: He was talking about society, which in fact is what establishes government.

African American gentleman: I have a business and I have the God given right to be as greedy as I want to and to make as much as I can to be rich. That's called capitalism.

Feisty life partner: Not on the backs of others you don't.


At this point the African American guy stormed off absolutely FURIOUS! One of the other conservatives out there came up and told the older gentleman to stop talking to us because we had already voted and there was nothing he could do with us.

Interesting viewpoints from a "religious right, family values sort of party".

Even after the third guy stormed off as well, I kept talking to the older gentleman and giving him facts about the Republican voting record and his reply was "show me proof". I told him to do his own research and that google was his friend. I do my research and so should he.

Anyway, much fun was had by all... well, almost all.... I don't think the conservatives had too much fun talking with people who actually didn't have their heads in the sand.

I want to go back and discuss matters more with them. It doesn't seem to take too much to get them unhinged. :-D

we were saying. There were passersby who nodded and smiled.

20. Please don't call them "uncle toms"... that's a very racist term.

One thing that really irks me about some of the teabillies is that they are actually racist. I would never want to be likened to one of them.

My guess is that he actually came from a poor background and pulled himself up by his bootstraps. His perception of what is actually important in life is quite skewed, and he is obviously angry about anyone "taking something away from him", and I can sort of understand that. I don't agree with his view point but I would never call him an "uncle tom", or anyone else for that matter.


Something that I thought about on the way home, and related to Supernova, was a story that I read when I was in about third of fourth grade. It was about a young boy who was very poor. He really liked a girl in his class, but was ridiculed by all all of the other students for being poor. That night he washed his clothes in the kitchen sink and pressed them between his mattress and the floor so that he would look as presentable as possible. Being a humble kid, the little girl looked past his being dirt poor and liked him anyway.

As the school broke for Thanksgiving, he knew that his family wouldn't have the normal American feast that the other kids were going to have. A charity worker came around to give his family a turkey. The little boy replied that it wouldn't do them any good as they only had a hot plate and they couldn't cook it.

The story went on, but it was about putting yourself in the other persons shoes and trying to understand where they were coming from. The story never said if the kid was black or white. It didn't matter because that wasn't the point of the story.

It's not that far of a stretch today to understand that lesson since so many people have lost their homes and are in some cases living in their cars or in tents.

That story stuck with me my entire life and is why I would never ever call someone an "uncle tom". You just don't know what their life was like, and in most cases you just need to be thankful that you didn't have to live it.

Sorry to have offended you, but truth is, in private we call 'em much worse like dumbass -----ahs. And when it comes to the likes of Clarence Thomas, Alan Keyes, Herman Cain, etc it devolves to motherf---ing dumbass -------------

I've never heard a successful black person saying "yessah, massah".  However, I have heard them speaking English without a lot of slang, and being respectful to  other people.  People that give respect also get respect.

I have to run the maze of both dim and rep sponsors at my local voting place.

Whenever anyone asks if I want a sample ballot, I reply "no, thanks".

I go inside, SHOW MY ID, get my ballot, mark it, feed it into the machine, walk out, done.

Aren't there laws against electioneering that close to a polling place? I mean, he had to be pretty close if the DUmmy was still talking to him until he was "drowned out by the whoosh of the door".

I think in Florida it's 100 feet. There are always people standing across the street with signs, but no one on the grounds of the polling site itself.

Of course it's from a DUmmy so it's all bullshit to begin with.
