The kindness of strangers....
« on: May 28, 2008, 09:48:14 PM »
I have been looking for my cell phone for DAYS.  I couldn't find it anywhere.  I gave up on finding it and was looking at purchasing another one.  I was bummed because I couldn't get a new one on my plan until December so I would have had to pay full price.

Anyway, I just got a call from a woman who just found it at a Kohls in one of their carts.  She took it home because she wanted to make sure it was returned to the owner.  My husband is going over there to pick it up, it just so happens she lives about a mile away from me.

It sure does make me feel good that someone took the time and effort to return it.  :)

Glad the phone was found.

In the wrong hands it could of cost you alot of money....calls overseas, etc...

Maybe this lady that lives just a mile away will become a new friend.

I am sure you will do something nice for her. Not so much a reward, but a gift for her being so kind. If she has kids, you could always mail her a gift card for a pizza place or movie store....

ha... I thought you sounded sort of "funny" the last few days. I shared my most intimate secrets with that woman.

I agree, give that lady a burp rag.  :evillaugh:

My husband offered her money and she said she wouldn't take it but he shoved it in her hand and said, "you saved me a couple of hundred dollars because I didn't have to buy my wife a new phone".  It was a teenager that found it and called me.  Her parents were standing at the door when my husband came to pick it up.

What a nice girl.

The story keeps getting better....that is great!

Or...the teen felt guilty because her mom and dad had caught her using the phone as her own for the past couple of days and your next bill will be $3000....but at least her folks noticed what was going on before the bill got any higher.

That was very nice, especially these days.  I took my kids to the movies a month or so back and they knocked my Blackberry off in the theater.  Some teenager took it and decided not to give it back.  They used it, checked voice mail, etc.  I left a message offering a $100 reward if they returned it (just before shutting of service on the phone), but they never responded.  I checked the phone bill and found a number they called.  After buying a new phone, the number that was called from my phone when it was stolen, called my new phone and I tried to get information on who they were trying to call.  All I could get was it was some 15 year old... not a whole lot I could do.

Time before that, I lost my phone in a cab in NYC.  I called the cap company and they said they would bring it by the hotel I was staying at.  Needless to say, that never happened and when I called the cab company the next day, they had no record of a cabby finding the phone.

The cell phone thing is such a scam.  Sure, they are cheap when you sign up for a plan, but if you lose the phone and don't have insurance (which means you end up paying the cost of a replacement phone in a few months time), they charge you outrageous prices to get a new one without adding a new line or extended your contract for many years.  The whole "free phone with activation" ends up costing $200-$300 for a new phone if you lose it.  Lot of BS...

Glad you didn't have that happen to you BEG!  :)

The cost of the phone is subsidised by the wireless provider to get or keep your business....

I remember when a bag phone was $400 with a one year contract....and you simply paid by the minute....other then the free weekends.

I lost my phone one saturday night, and didn't realize it until I got home.  I called it.  my bartender answered it with, "I found your phone, WE".  I'm not sure what the moral of this story is, but I wanted to contribute. :-)

after further thought, I think the moral of the story is, "always tip big". :-)

I don't lose them much, but I do wear them out a lot, and they suffer really awful fates sometimes.  I dropped off the landing of the stairway of the third floor at work;  it fell all the way to the floor of the basement.  I never really thought about how many parts composed a cell phone until that afternoon.  I backed over one with the car.  I left one in the sun during a ballgame one august and the screen turned black.  it survived the immediate experience, but was never the same after that.

but if it flips and/or has a hinge, and most of them do, I will wear it out.

as far as blackberries go, I was murder on the little wheel.  I have a drawer at work full of blackberries with broken wheels.  I finally gave up on the wheel thing altogether, and got a curve;  it has a track ball.  we'll see if that lasts any longer.

All kidding aside, this is a great story.

Thanks for sharing it, BEG.  I feel a little better this morning for reading it (and the usual gang of fun responses).

I am going home tonight but I always feel a little homesick after a few days, so some cheering up is always in order.

You should always have a "home" listed in the phone, because that's what we look for and call it.  Otherwise, someone will call the phone eventually.

Mine was returned at work the one time I lost it because they found "Mom & Dad" listed and called them to ask who they knew that may be there at the time. :-)

Now I have one of those cases that my belt slips through and magnetically closes around the phone. If I lose it now I have a whole lot bigger problem than the phone missing.  :rotf:

Speaking of phones, I just returned a phone holster to verizon.....once you removed it from your belt, you could not simply flip open the phone, without taking it out of the holster as well......I could see it being a pain...it's a new model of phone, so you pretty much have to get the case from them or it wont fit right.....this one fit alright, as long as it never rang.....
