For some reason I always confuse him with George Wallace.

I thought that he had died a long time ago.

It was an epic ass whoopin'.

McGovern was the point man for the turn of the democrat party from being pro America to anti America.
While I will not gloat in his passing and will wish his family peace it needs to be recognized that the destructive socialist views he had has framed the dems of today.

I consider McGovern as more of a "useful idiot" for the radical left than a full blown Marxist ideologue.  He was a product of his time -Dust Bowl, Depression - that drew the wrong conclusions and overlooked the consequences and obvious logical end points, of the policies he espoused. I read somewhere that he had become much more of a Libertarian, than the Progressive Loon he appeared to be in '68.  But, I could be wrong.

He became the Progressive standard bearer through stupidity and "forces behind the scenes" that hijacked the (D)emocraptastic party.  No excuses, Mr. McGovern.  You should have known better.  Emotion makes for bad policy.  I only hope that enough people have relearned that lesson now.

This always comes to mind when someone mentions George Wallace.  Apt, or not.

Nixon vs McGovern was the first presidential election my college roommate and I were old enough to vote.

I was for Nixon and she was for McGovern. Neither one of us was very political nor did we have philosophical discussions regarding either candidate.

We both voted and obviously "my" side won.

She didn't speak to me for 2 weeks because it was "my fault" that Nixon won.

Yeah, my vote was the reason.....  :thatsright:

There you go again, debk, causing trouble wherever you go.   :-)

The mother of a childhood friend stated that she was going to vote for McGovern because he seemed like a "nice man."   :thatsright:   Women, sheesh.   Why do I remember this?  Even as a kid, it struck me as inadequate.  There must be more of a criteria than that.

That was my first election too.  I turned eighteen that year.  Nixon made American sense to me.  McGovern was a philosophical screwball.

It was in yesterday's news that he is now in hospice.

Lots of people confuse him with Eugene McCarthy who is [considered] the candidate who caused LBJ do abdicate the '68 election and who's supporters caused most of the problems at the ChiTown convention.  I remember watching TV at the time to see if I knew anyone getting their hair parted by Daley's finest.  I have never regretted not attending that slug fest although at the time I knew several people who did.   :hammer:
