THUNDER STORMS!!! BOOM!
« on: October 13, 2012, 06:36:07 AM »
A series if T-storms are moving through right now. Turned off my computer twice for bad ones.
Got all quiet, so back on it went. and BOOM here is a new one right over head!

Iowa was dry all summer, and now when its too late for the farms...now it rains really good.

So. Are do you surf the web in T-storms? Or am I the only foolish one here?

Depends how close they are. If they're close (within a half-mile or so), I shut 'em down.

I don't have a UPC and apart from simple surge protectors on the equipment (whose effectiveness in stopping an errant lightning bolt is questionable), I'm kinda naked....

It looks like Iowa's getting hit pretty good at 6:00 a.m.

Here, we had light rain during the night.

Sometimes I stay on line during thunderstorms, other times I shut down.  It's random.

Same here, in the summer.  Now, not so much.  It was below freezing this morning.

It's a judgement call for me. Even with a UPS, I'll unplug everything if it gets shakey.

Glads to hear I'm not the only one who surfs the web naked.

I too depend on "surge protectors".  I like to live on the edge.

T-Storms are strange.  All my conceptions were destroyed about them when we had one heck of a doozie.   Huge old tree in front yard was struck.  In bed I woke up and the air turned a pale shade of blue.  Static electricity made all my hair stand up.

Next morning  went out to check and could not see any marks on the tree.  Next day all the leaves died and limbs stared to fall.
My landloard sent tree people to remove the tree and they found that the electricity had come[ up] from the ground and out the top.

Never ever had I heard of this before.    Then later on I heard of people that were magnets for lightening, all kinds of strange storys.

One of the reasons people will take a dog on their boat, when  under a clear sky the dogs ears twitch then one heads for shore, have heard of people on a bright sunny day being hit with a bolt from 20 miles away.

Trying to remember the math here, when one sees the flash count and each second means the srorm is 5 miles away-----Something like that.

I normally shut the computers down when storms get close. I have bot ha PC and a Mac and last night I forgot to shut down the Mac before bedtme. I doubt that anything happened to it since it was mostly thunder for a short time and some rain.

There is a house near me that has been struck three times in five years.

Haven't heard anything lately.

I shut down my computer if the lightening is loud enough for the dog to bark.

I always use the internet when it's storming out.  Laptop.  If I feel it's too stormy, I just unplug the charger if it's charged and won't die in the middle of the storm.

It's great to hear you are all finally getting the rain you need.  I know it's late, but at least you are getting it.

For some reason we don't get any exciting electrial storms here anymore.  Used to get some righteous ones over the ocean.  I've been thriu some humdingers though.  One was in AZ out in the middle of nowhere.  Didn't think I was going to live through it. The bolts were hitting the ground all around me, above me, in front of me.   Another time was up in the mountains camping in a camper.  Our hair stood on end - that was so weird.  We looked like a bunch of smurfs

Las Vegas and my area have had some flash flooding also.

We even had a funnel cloud sighting. Rare for Nevada, very rare.

I shut down the machines last night about 30 seconds before one CRACK! BOOM!!! occurred right overhead.

The lights went off for a full second, then came back on. I had to reset my clock radio, but other than that, nothing else happened.

Our golden retriever hides under my desk during these types of storms. Utterly panic-stricken. Don't even try to get her outside to pee and poop. Ain't gonna happen...  :lmao:

We usually shut down and unplug during bad storms, since we know our lines are overhead now. We didn't when they were buried to the house.

Didn't have any choice last night, the first good BOOM shut the power off for the rest of the storm.  I have no idea what it hit, there were no fires visible from our place, but it turned off the whole road.

My 3 year old granddaughter was very angry at us for "turning off the lights and TV!!"  It took her quite some time and possession of a flashlight to get happy again.   :lmao:

The slightest power glitch screws up our computers at work.

Lets just say in a hypothetical situation that if I work in a retail pharmacy and there is a line of customers and all of a sudden you can no longer wait on anyone for about twenty minutes.

That would suck in the same hypothetical situation.

The store can be dark and that does not keep the old bastards from dropping the f'bomb like we are in charge of electricity. They like to yell and scream at us. I should ask them for their DU cards.
