Which I will forever refer to as the DUnning–Kruger effect - I just learned about this from http://ace.mu.nu/

 wikipedia defined it as-

A lot of psychologists and sociologists have gone down in their respective pseudosciences' histories for slapping their names on something everyone smart already knew.  Even when I was a teenager, I had run into people in authority who projected every appearance of confidence and convinced others to trust in their abilities with that projected image, when in fact they were bungling morons whose leadership could only result in disaster.  I always referred to it mentally as 'The Illusion of Competence,' but it's the same phenomenon, just viewed from a different perspective (The effect on those around the loser instead of what's going on in the loser's own alleged brain).

I graduated with honors from law school and C&GS, but the best job I ever had or will ever have was being an M60A1 TC when I was a buck sergeant.

Tanker's "illusion of competence" and April Razz's "nadin effect" are great examples of this.

But really, I'm surprised more haven't heard of the "DUnning-Kruger effect;" it's been around for a while, and I seem to have been aware of it the very first time I saw, and understood, a Democrat in office.

It does, indeed.  Whenever (D)U-Kr sufferers encounter, even the slightest of political situations or one could be construed as such, they go into Walter Mitty/Billy Liar mode.

As a young, dumb Marine ATC, I had a Warrant Officer who was a complete hard-dick.  The total Mr. Perfect/condescending to the lower ranks type.  I later had a NCOIC who knew the guy, years before, as a buck SGT in Vietnam.  Said the WO couldn't control himself out of a wet paper bag, a complete rock who was unsafe to leave alone with more than one aircraft in the pattern.  

Then I witnessed it myself.  My NCOIC was actually being a little nice.
