I have a cabin with a surface well and need some advice...

The surface well has always met our water needs. We also use rain barrels and have water rights from the river that runs along the property. Due to Climate Change we are experiencing an unusually long period of dry weather and the well is not performing as well as it has in the past. i have to change the filters frequently and it has been suggested I might want to dig a traditional well or even put in some sort of filtering system I frankly do not understand.

Can someone explain to me in laymens terms the difference between surface wells and traditional wells and things I could do to make the current well function at it's best.

1. Is the problem sediment, algae or dissolved minerals?

2. The filters are requiring more frequent changing due to what I have been told are mineral related. I believe that has something to due

With the filtering system that's been recommended.

The cabin has been there for 57 years. The current pump is fairly new. The river on the other hand is about as low as I've ever seen it and we are expecting

A dry Oct. and light snow pack. The last 2 months have been the dryest in history or near to it.

A puddle.  Preferably one contaminated with diesel or gasoline.

Sounds like what most people call a "dug" well.  Basically digging a hole below the water table.  Then again it's a primitive talking, so all common sense goes out the window.

It's October, idiot.

Due to Climate Change

That is a shorthand term often used at the DUmp.

Whatever comes after "Due to Climate Change" is some DUmp calamity that was clearly the fault of George W. Bush.

(The improper use of capital letters is a DUmp tradition.)

Dunno about where the dummie lives but a "surface well" around these parts is usually referring to a creek that comes down the mountain and empties into a man made basin to catch the water. That could be a pond, concrete pool or even a metal tank.

Quite common around these parts up in the hollers.   :cheersmate:
