What would You Do?

My kitty had surgery last wednesday. I picked her up on Friday. Sat. she started sneezing a bit, still eating and drinking. Sun morning she was drinking but no appetite so went to the store and got her some baby food (chicken) she ate 1/2 the jar. Sun. no drinking no eating, just sneezing and her little mouth would open when she tried to breathe. Mon. gave her water with an eye dropper she ate nothing. Tues. first thing called vet who said bring her right over. That will be 200.00 please and we are going to start an IV says the little tech up front. Wait a minute says I, isn't the Doc going to look at her and tell me what's wrong. "He dosen't have time" says the tech. Well can you direct me to a vet who has time to talk to the patient? So I left with my cat and have been giving her pediolyte all day with a dropper.

Is it unreasonable to expect a vet to talk to you after your cat has become ill post operatively? Or am I just being irrational?

Was the vet in the middle of another surgery at the time?  That's about the only excuse I would accept.

no he wasn't I was there at 9Am his first surgery started at 11AM. they graciously told me he would be very happy to call me after his surgeries were completed. Looks like I will be looking for another vet.

ok, am not a doctor, am not a veternarian
but...
do have some experience in both people and animal medicine for what its worth
sounds like your cat has pneumonia/respiratory distress caused by the fluid build up in the lungs from surgery, and/or possible aspiration of secretions during surgery
this is a preventable post operative complication, did the vet put her on antibiotics after surgery?

raise some hell and find a decent vet that will help you ASAP

Does the vet work for himself or is he one of the "corporate vets" that seem to be happening now?  I learned the difference the hard way.  

If the clinic is owned by a venture corporation, run the other way fast.  Seek a private vet working in his/her own practice.

Definately sounds like an upper repiratory or pnemonia thing.  I would be espicailly worried as it was after a surgery.   I'd take her to another vet to see about antibiotics to help kick the infection.

I am not familiar with corporate vets. This clinic had a very nice vet who has taken care of my pets for at leat the last 3 years. When Mama went in for her surger there was a new doctor, to say the least he does things quite differently than the other guy. I will be looking for a new vet.

What is a corporate vet?

It is very reasonable.  I was fortunate to have the best vet anywhere when I had my beloved 25-yo kitty.  He was also wonderful and gentle (and didn't charge me for his time) when he helped my baby go to the Rainbow Bridge. He ALWAYS had time to talk to me about Musica.  ALWAYS.

Any good vet will make time, or at least call you back promptly.

I've never had a vet who charged for a post-op visit.  They may charge for additional meds/treatment, but certainly not up front.  I think I'd tell them to  :bird: and find another vet immediately.

Thank you everybody for your advice and input. To update MamaKitty has a new doctor who checked her out talked to my husband (he had to take her in cause I had to work) they switched antibiotics and gave her something to stop the sneezing. She looks a little better this afternoon and actually lapped a little water, I gave her more with the eyedropper. She hates that pediolyte stuff it makes her foam at the mouth

another update!, so yesterday she gets worse again, vomiting green liquid just a far as she can spew it, and behind that a kind of pitiful yet demonic cat wail that makes yer spine curl, so back to the new vet, who puts her in the hospital, says it might be a post operative pancreatitis. So then I come home and husband is dressed and ready to go to the emergency room, he looks grey, says he is in great pain, so off we go, he has a kidney stone, we were in the er for about 7 hours! Now mind you I'm not complaining (much) but all this after I had awakened at 3:30 am, and we were off in the boat at 7:am to go fishing and do some swimming, I saw lots of dolphins yesterday, day started nice, ended not so nice and I was tired as hell.  :ohnoes:
