What's for Dinner ~ Sunday Sept 30th

About mid-afternoon, franksolich went to the convenience store in town to get supper, one $1.59 slice of pepperoni pizza.

<<still full.

1. I am going to pull the flank steak out of the freezer for a Sunday dinner.

I think I am going to roast it with carrots and make a lentil salad.

And I have a couple of apples, so might make an apple crisp today.

Better half loves a meal like this and the leftover steak can be used later in the week.

How about you?

^^can hardly wait to see the cbayer primitive's journal entry about cooking on board a lilliputian boat.

Given the lack of space, she can probably stuff her whole kitchen into her purse.

2. Sounds delicious! We had Swai. Bill cuts it into bite size pieces and we batter fry it, and onion rings. Y***y stuff.

I'll have a big salad at dinnertime, since he's working today.

3. Had to look that one up. Iridescent shark? Have never heard of it.

Enjoy your salad and hope you are feeling well!

^^in reference to that the near-tropical weather down south in Arkansas doesn't agree with dear old sweet Lu.

5. Oh...so you eat meat, eh?

No issue with it? I mean, besides the animal's life...what about the ecological impact?

4. Mushroom-Barley Soup, Hard Rolls and a Three Bean Salad

I have a concert tonight (belong to a community choir) and my husband took off for Pgh. to attend the visitation for a childhood friend's mother. I have to be at the concert an hour early for rehearsal and would never have made it back from Pgh. in time to do that.

6. We start with butternut-apple soup.

I had no idea it would take me all afternoon to make it, but it did. Lamb chops are marinating in garlic, evoo, fresh rosemary and some raspings of lemon rind, ground black pepper. I'll roast some small red potatoes with the lamb and steam some broccoli for a side. No bread tonight, because I'll be making bread again starting tomorrow. So thankful for the fall temperatures!

Now, remember the First Rule of Primitivity: DUmmies lie, all the time DUmmies lie.

In real life, the primitives just pulled random leftovers out from their refrigerators for Sunday supper.

I had to look it up.

It's "iridescent shark." whatever the Hell that is.

Actually, dear old sweet Lu just pulled leftovers out from the refrigerator.

Apparently it is basically Asian farmed catfish, and according to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, US catfish is actually a better ecological choice.  But I suppose if you need to look pretentious about your supper...

Yeah - Its a super big Asian catfish that is also frequently sold to unknowing people as aquarium pets. When they are young, they look like miniature sharks. Unfortunately, the fish often lead a short, uncomfortable life as few people have a tank big enough for them to fully develop (40 to 50 feet long) so, their growth ends up stunted, and they ultimately die of organ failure.  Iridescent Sharks are also schooling fish, so one actually should purchase at least  3 to 5 of them - so, increase that 'home aquarium' to at least a hundred feet long.

I keep a freshwater aquarium as a hobby, and I read up on any fish I might be interested in first. Sadly, totally inappropriate fish are often marketed by pet stores staffed by people who have no clue about what they are selling.

Are you a fan of the show "Tanked"? Some of those tanks they build are awesome.

Those are some crazy tanks - I like the one they did with half an antique milk truck - and the 4 storey round one that went from basement to roof with the spiral staircase is also really great.

Sadly, I don't have the time to go with a super big saltwater tank. That's a labor of love that I just don't have time for. I have a 50 gallon fresh tank, filtered by a Fluval 305. I also inherited a Fluval G6 -brand new in the box- to replace the 305 with eventually.

My tank is also setup to maintain a high current. There are limits to what fish I can keep (No goldfish and/or variants, no Betta, etc.), but I like the movement of the plants and whatnot, and a high current opens up a few other interesting doors, like Ghost Shrimp.

I have a big river a hundred or so yards away. Does that count, Miskie?

Mushroom-Barley Soup, Hard Rolls and a Three Bean Salad
::)   I loathe three bean salad.  I don't even like looking at it.  And where's the protein in this?  Nowhere.

Why would butternut apple soup (yuck) take all afternoon to make?

I've tried shark before, and found it nearly inedible.  A nasty texture, and way over-fishy.

And cbayer.  Pulling a flank steak out of a freezer, roasting it, making apple crisp in an oven.  I thought she supposedly lived in a little rowboat.

Hmmm! Never heard anybody say shark was too fishy. Are you sure someone didn't pass off a tuna steak as shark? Shark to me reminds me of almost a steak type texture and pretty mild. Especially Mako.
