There is normally quite a mess if there is a head shot and exit wound in a confined area, but usually not a real cinematic mess.  There will be bits of brain, hair, and blood all over, but it's pretty finely-divided spray and doesn't show up that much on film (Now using something like a 12-ga, that's another story...) like a big stage blood bag being blown up by a squib in a movie.  The widespread mess is sickeningly clear to the people who have to clean it up in person, though.

What do you mean?  From what I understand, the chase started because he held some woman up at gunpoint.  I haven't read what he was doing before the armed auto robbery happened.  This is Maricopa County.  Car chases happened all the time when we lived there and they didn't end well for the offender.  The guy has probably been holed up in tent city numerous times and didn't want to go back....  ;)
