What would you say to a middle aged guy who hated PE in school and now wonders about joining a gym.

Later in the fall. Now, I am biking (mostly) up to 20 miles a day when schedule and weather allows

But in Michigan, that will come to a screeching halt roughly around Thanksgiving, give or take a few weeks due to weather (specifically snow and ice making it unsafe).

And, wondering if, and thinking should, I should do more than just biking, which is a cardio workout. Think I should learn to do strength training as well.

Gyms -- what can you tell me. I know they vary, but thinking something like an LA Fitness -- is that really about health, not a pickup joint? I would be embarrassed at first, but think I could cope. And I think maybe some initial professional help would be good from a trainer or exercise physiologist?

Hmmm.

Something tells me that Dennis in Michigan doesn't really need to worry about being picked up.

2. Hi Denninmi

A few questions:
Born in the 60ties?
MBX or RR?
What are you goals?
In what ways are you concerned about health?
Insulin resistance?
Overweight?

3. Hi

Yes 1965.

Mountain bike but just riding pavement.

Need to lose 38 more pounds now to get to my prior thin healthy weight.

A1C was just done is normal albeit higher side of normal.

Would be great to lose weight develop strength and endurance and look good again in levis and tshirts.

Sorry reply brief hard to type on iPod. LOL

And then at the end, this most curious thing:

Only on DU does joining a gym cause this much drama.  A normal person looks around, gets a free week trial at a gym that looks interesting, then signs up.

Foghorn called him a sissy (not that word, specifically) for not venturing out year-round.
This too shall pass.

Who cares if the DUmmy hated P.E. in school?  What does that have to do with joining a gym 20-30 years later?  Geez, DUmmies have to over-think every damn decision.

Uh huh, and that's really recent too.

He started hanging around there after it was suggested franksolich be his literary mentor and agent.

I dunno why it drove him nuts, though; I thought it was a good idea.

Thanks, sir.

I was trying to figure out what possibly could be offensive in the exercise forum.

I am back to a size 32 after years of being a 38 thanks to grinding poverty. Truth be told I can wear 30's now but it kind of freaks me out.

That aside, to be honest all you need to do is eat less and move more. Before life hit the fan I went to the gym five days a week and Krav Maga classes twice a week and the weight never moved much. But now that I have to decide on one meal a day or two and working in a small hardware store that keeps me moving I actually look like I did in my mid 20's ( from the neck down ).

I miss food but DAMN I am looking pretty good.

I'm comfortable at 42.  I don't feel like stressing over it since my weight hasn't changed in over ten years.

I'm happy being fat.

Zero bongs.

When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Work out at home and save the monthly membership fees.  Buy a stationary bike for your house.  I know, the scenery isn't the same as actually going out to ride your bike.  But that's your own fault for living where it snows.  ;)

The veiled message the primitive is trying to send leads me to believe his first day at the gym would be composed of about 20 bicep curls with some 5 pound free-weights followed by stationing himself in front of the women's locker room looking like this:
