"Revolution"
« on: September 18, 2012, 09:44:05 AM »
Anyone watch it? The wife and I did last night. The story-line is interesting, however, the glaring problems keep bugging me.

1. No electricity. Does this mean no lighting storms?

2. Localized use of electricity, however with all the "dead" laptops, PC's, etc.. that would be around a character uses a cobbled together 16 bit (guessing) computer that runs DOS??? The monitor is a CRT, green, no less. Huh?

3. No guns? (or very little) in the USA?  REALLY? I guess this little item was needed to create "sheeple" to feel empathy for. Oh, Abrams gets an "F" for giving everyone crossbows, ala,  The Hunger Games.

Lots, and lots of WTF's.    :hammer:

There isn't enough "suspension of disbelief" in the galaxy to make me buy the underlying storyline.

I don't care if the answer to life, the universe and everything was secreted away at the corner of Roosevelt Rd. and Columbus Dr; you couldn't pay me enough to make a jaunt to Chicago in a *******ed tank, let alone on foot.  And the price goes up when the power goes out and the last vestiges of "civilization" there go down the sewer pipe.

Sure, there are faux pas in the show, but it gave me food for though as to what to do IF we get an EMP or something like that. Herbal remedies will be "modern medicine". I, too, question the firearms thing. I'm sorry, but I wouldn't recognize the authority of ANY militia, especially one where a Sergeant crowned himself as a General. I'd be more apt to shoot first and ask questions later were they to come parading into my "village". Bows are the most effective weapon after firearms. Bear in mind, the majority of the story took place 15 years after the power went out. People may have simply run out of ammo.

They can't reload? And just how hard is it to generate electricity ? Even if it is local at least they could keep their own homes going . This show sounds more like they want to push a no gun go green meme to me. Even in Mad Max they had power and water and some gas after a nuclear war.

EMP clicks the big off switch, and I'd just about bet you that I'd have things rigged for power again at my place in no more than 48 hours, even improvising the equipment from scratch, MacGyver-style.

Not likely. An EMP would fry most electronics. In the show, they mentioned that batteries didn't even work. Not real sure about that.

Building a generator doesn't require electronics, sir.

Hell, you can build a windmill from a ceiling fan and an alternator (and a long stick).  How hard can it be?

The premise is that electricity does not work.

So the laws of physics simply cease to exist on this TV show?

You can create electricity.

Hence my issues. The idea is that it's been "turned off".      :wtf3:

Ummm, yeah, sure. One CAN build a generator without electronics, BUT, it would be unregulated voltage. In order to regulate that voltage, one would really need electronics of some sort.

Hell, you can build a windmill from a ceiling fan and an alternator (and a long stick).  How hard can it be?

Alternators require a regulated output, therefore a diode pack, normally built inside them anymore.
